The ground beneath their feet shudders, and a low, rumbling growl echoes through the corridor as the hallway's walls begin to shudder, causing the torches on the walls to rattle precariously. The air is thick with the stench of decay, and the scuttling sounds intensify, making it seem as though the very walls are closing in on them. Merrin's holy symbol glows softly, casting flickering shadows on the walls as she readies herself for battle. Suddenly, a gust of musty air wafts through the corridor, carrying with it the faint scent of rot and corruption. The skeletal warrior's bony hand has reanimated, its eyes glowing with an unnatural hunger as it lurches forward, its bony fist swinging wildly in the dark.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The tower's wards pulse with dark energy even in total darkness—as if the stone itself is breathing. I trace patterns in my mind, feeling out the geometry of this trap. These are old spells, predating my time by centuries, bound in blood and shadow rather than mere arcane theory. Varrika’s instinct for battle is admirable but misplaced here. We can’t just hack our way through magic we don't understand—the ward's trigger points map like a three-dimensional sigil, each pressure plate connected to something worse than whatever skittering horror lurks in the dark. The scuttling gets closer—multiple sources now, echoing off walls that seem too close together. Merrin's crossbow is her best tool here; she can defend from distance without disturbing the wards. I need a moment to map this pattern before we proceed. The runes suggest a corruption cycle—a feeding ground where death fuels more death ad infinitum. I speak softly, even though the dark makes volume irrelevant: "Stop. We're not dealing with simple undead here." My fingers glow faintly as I trace sigils in the air, trying to read the ward's purpose through its emanations. "The walls themselves are part of this spell—the stone remembers violence and amplifies it."

My own power feels... wrong here. Corrupted energy clings to me like oil, but I push that unease down—now isn't the time for personal demons. The wards are unstable, yes, but they're also predictive. If we move carefully, strategically, we can thread this needle without triggering whatever final boss lurks deeper in. Halie's protective instincts will serve us well if she stays focused on holy energy rather than direct confrontation. We need her light as a beacon more than her sword arm right now—let the undead come to her instead of us walking into their embrace. The scuttling stops just beyond sight range, waiting. I complete my mental map of the ward's trigger points and speak again, voice barely above silence: "There are four pressure plates between here and the next chamber—the skeletal warrior was probably tied to the first one. The others... I don't know what they summon yet." My wings rustle softly as I shift position, trying to pinpoint the source of those scuttling sounds without disturbing anything beneath my feet. I'm apprehensive about how deep this corruption goes—my own magic feels like it's fighting against itself—but there’s no turning back now. The Time-Splitting Sword is here, and someone needs to claim it before whatever entity calls this place 'Devourer' claims us instead.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch the scuttling sounds draw closer, my heart hammering against my ribs. The darkness presses in, thick and choking, and I feel the magic of this place like a physical weight on my skin, ancient and hungry. "Jeane," my voice is a strained whisper, so low it's nearly inaudible over the rumbling growl echoing through the corridor, "what are you seeing? Are those runes reacting to our presence?"
My eyes strain to pierce the gloom, but all I can make out are the vague shapes of my companions, huddled together in a tight knot of fear and determination. The scent of old dust and something fouler, more decayed, fills my nostrils. It’s the smell of a long-dead thing stirring from slumber. "Varrika," I call out to our warrior, my tone sharp with urgency, "if we can't see anything, how are we supposed to fight whatever’s coming? We need light."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I move close to Merrin, voice low. "Don't rush in. We need to understand these wards before we trigger more of them." I glance at Varrika's ready stance. "I know you want to fight, but think—every time one of us disturbs the wrong stone, another bone bag gets up to dance." I turn to Jeane. "What are you seeing? Are those runes reacting?" I grip my holy symbol, silver cold against my palm. The magic here feels...wrong. Like rot underneath the stone.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The darkness presses in, thick and cloying, as the scuttling sounds draw nearer. Varrika grips her mace tightly, muscles coiled and ready for battle. Her keen dwarven eyes strain against the oppressive darkness, trying to discern any hint of movement or threat. She calls out to her companions, her gravelly voice cutting through the heavy air. "Stay sharp, everyone. Whatever's coming, it ain't friendly." Her gaze darts to each member of the party in turn, assessing their readiness. Merrin, hunched over the lock with her tools, gets a particularly hard look. "You got that lock picked yet? We're fixin' to have company real soon."

Varrika shifts her weight, settling into a stable fighting stance just inside the doorway. The narrow confines of the hall limit their options, but she knows her job is to hold this position at all costs. She feels the weight of responsibility for her companions, especially Halie and her holy symbol. "Halie, keep that light of yours ready. We may need it bad."

As the sounds grow louder still, a low rumble building beneath them, Varrika feels a chill run down her spine. The air reeks of decay, and she knows they are not alone in this accursed place. She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for the battle to come. Whatever horrors this tower holds, she will face them head-on, mace in hand. Her thoughts flicker to the Time-Splitting Sword, the reason they've braved this madness. "We're so close now," she mutters under her breath. "Ain't no undead horde gonna stop us from gettin' what we came for." She tightens her grip on the mace, feeling its familiar weight. "Let them come. Varrika Thornwake will meet 'em at the gates."
