As Varrika steps forward into the tower, her mace at the ready, the darkness seems to press in around her, thick and oppressive. The air grows colder, and an eerie, scuttling noise emanates from the depths of the hallway, growing louder with each passing moment. The ward's pulse intensifies, casting flickering shadows on the walls as the magical energy seems to writhe like a living thing. Suddenly, a faint, pungent smell wafts through the air, making Halie's eyes water. She winces, her grip on her crossbow tightening as she takes a step back, her heavy mace at the ready. The sound of scuttling grows louder still, and the ground beneath their feet begins to vibrate, as if something massive is stirring in the darkness ahead. The skeletal warrior, destroyed mere moments ago, rises once more, its bony arms outstretched as it shambles forward into the hallway, its empty eye sockets glowing with an unnatural hunger.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I push my wings tight against my back in the narrow space of the corridor. The ward's pulse is wrong—each beat sends little tremors through the stone underfoot, and I feel it in my teeth. This isn't warding designed to keep out thieves. It's warding designed to make sure things stay in.

'Listen,' I say to Halie, voice low. 'The ward's geometry is collapsing inward with each pulse. Whatever that voice meant by Devourer, the ward is feeding it energy now we've triggered this.' I trace patterns in the air with my fingers, following the distortions in magical pressure. 'We can't just barge forward anymore. The corridor itself will try to choke us if we're not careful.'

I turn to Merrin. 'Put that crossbow down for a moment and focus on channeling light into the bolt tips—silver won't mean much if we're fighting things that shouldn't exist in this reality.' To Seraphine: 'What I'm seeing is... it's like the ward's core isn't at the center of the tower. It's somewhere else entirely, pulling all this power through these walls.'

Varrika shifts her weight, mace ready but held back. The scuttling sound is closer now—definitely multiple points of movement, something with too many legs and no respect for geometry. I concentrate, feeling out the edges of what's coming: not one creature, but a swarm of... something chitinous and fast. 'We've got maybe ten seconds before whatever that is gets here,' I say calmly to everyone. 'Form a tight line across this corridor—if we let it get around us in this dark, we're done.' My hands begin glowing with containment magic, ready to push back the wave of whatever's scuttling toward us.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the ancient magic of this place like a physical weight on my skin, a malevolent pulse that seems to echo through every bone in my body. The air itself feels thick with it, heavy and suffocating.
As Varrika steps forward into the tower, her mace held at the ready, I instinctively draw back, my gaze fixed on the shadowed corridors stretching out before us. The scuttling noise grows louder, more insistent, and a fresh wave of dread washes over me.
"The wards... they're active now," I murmur, my voice so low it's almost inaudible even to myself. I turn to Jeane, her eyes reflecting the same grim understanding I feel. "Jeane, what do you see? Any patterns in the ward energies?"
My fingers twitch with the urge to sketch out the layout of the wards, to map their pulsating rhythms and perhaps find a way through this labyrinth of death and magic. But fear roots me in place, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The scuttling grows louder, echoing off the stone walls. I grip my mace tighter, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at the first sign of movement. Halie tenses beside me, her breathing shallow and quick. I can feel the fear radiating off her in waves, but there's no time to offer comfort now. "Stay sharp," I growl under my breath, more to myself than to the others. "Whatever's coming, it won't be friendly."

The air grows thick with an ominous energy, like a storm brewing just out of sight. I can feel it in my bones, the same way I used to sense incoming artillery fire on the battlefield. Whatever this 'Devourer' is, it's feeding off the ward's energy now, and we've got to move fast if we want to get out of here alive. I take a step forward, into the darkness at the edge of our torchlight. The shadows seem to reach out for me, eager to snuff out the feeble light and drag me down into the unknown depths. But I won't let that happen. Not while I still have breath in my lungs and strength in my arms. "Alright, you maggot-brained bastards," I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. "Let's see what you've got."
