The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance now ajar with a dark, musty hallway stretching into the depths within, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel it now—the ward's pulse is wrong. The geometry of its energy isn't stable; it's growing stronger with each beat. Whatever that voice meant by 'Devourer,' I think we just woke its appetizer. We need to move deeper, but not blindly into those symbols. Varrika, hold our line here—if something scurries out, I want you to smash it into next week before it gets close enough to bite anyone. Merrin, keep that crossbow ready and cover Seraphine while she sketches the layout from a safe distance. Halie, I understand your caution, but we're not getting out of here by standing in the doorway forever. The ward magic is active now—it's already summoned one guardian, and it'll summon more if we trigger anything careless. We need to map this floor methodically before we go any deeper.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the ready, my eyes darting between the dark corridor ahead and the faces of my companions in the flickering torchlight. The air feels heavy, charged with a malevolent energy that prickles along my skin like static before a storm. Merrin's warning echoes in my mind - stay away from the wards - but my curiosity about their structure wars with her caution.
The scuttling sound grows louder, more insistent, and I see Varrika’s grip on her mace tighten. She looks like she wants to charge into the darkness head-on. That kind of recklessness got us into this mess in the first place. I shake my head slightly, trying to clear it. "Varrika," I say, my voice cutting through the tension with a sharp precision, "we can't just barge in there. We need to map this out first, understand what we're dealing with."
I turn to Jeane, who is still poring over her arcane notes, her brow furrowed in concentration. "Jeane, what do you see? Any patterns in the ward energies?" My gaze falls on Halie next, her crossbow drawn and ready. Her presence is a comfort, a reminder that we have divine protection if needed.
As I wait for their responses, I take a slow breath, centering myself. The fear is there, gnawing at the edges of my mind, but so is the thrill of discovery. Ancient magic like this, it's what I live for... even if it terrifies me at the same time. "We're here now," I mutter under my breath, more to myself than anyone else. Then louder, "So let's make sure we do this right."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I grip my mace tighter, feeling the familiar weight of it in my hands. The darkness seems to press in around us, thick and oppressive. I can hear the others shifting uneasily behind me, their breaths coming quick and shallow. "We can't just stand here," I growl, my voice a low rumble. "Those wards... they're active now. And whatever's coming, it won't be friendly."

I take a step forward, into the mouth of the tower. The darkness seems to part before me, as if it knows who I am. Who I was, in a different life. "Stay sharp," I call back over my shoulder. "We've got company coming, and it won't be pretty."

My eyes strain against the darkness, searching for any sign of movement. Any hint of the threat that lurks just out of sight. But there's nothing. Just the silence, and the weight of the unknown pressing down on us from all sides. I take another step forward, my mace held at the ready. The others fall in behind me, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. And then, from somewhere deep in the darkness, a sound. A scuttling, like nails on stone. And with it, a voice. Whispered. Faint. "Fools," it says. "You've awakened something that should have stayed asleep."

I feel a chill run down my spine, even as I tighten my grip on my mace. We're in for a fight. And I have a feeling it's going to be a long one.
