As Merrin steps forward with cautious steps, the air thick with dust and acrid smell grows heavier. The flickering torchlight casts eerie shadows on the crumbling stone walls, illuminating the glint of more wards etched into the stone. The red glow of the wards pulsates ominously, like a warning signal. Suddenly, the torches in the hallway sputter and die, plunging the group into darkness. A low, menacing chuckle echoes through the hallway, growing louder with each passing moment. The sound is accompanied by the soft scuttling of unseen legs, sending shivers down the spines of the party members. The skeletal warrior on the ground begins to twitch, its bones rattling as it slowly stands up, its empty eye sockets glowing with an unnatural light.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The darkness pressed in around us after the torches failed—an immediate, profound shift. I could feel it then, clearer than before: this tower is more than just abandoned stone. Something ancient sleeps here, or maybe wakes now because of our trespass. We should fall back to where Merrin’s bolt struck true and the first ward was triggered—the entrance hall with its high ceiling. There we can form a proper line of defense. This isn't the time for recklessness. I don’t care how eager you are to prove yourself, Halie—we map this corruption before stumbling into it blind. The scuttling sound grows louder, and now there’s that chuckling. Multiple things moving in the dark beyond our reach. Varrika, stay sharp with that mace. Merrin, keep your crossbow ready but don’t fire unless I give the word—we need to conserve bolts and understand what we’re facing first. Something’s reanimating down that hallway—the original skeleton is rising again from its own dust, which means the ward's effect persists even after destruction. That’s valuable information: these protections can be countered, but they also recruit new threats on failure. I’ll need to examine those runes closer when we have a secure position. The air itself feels wrong—heavy and resistant, like trying to breathe underwater. My wings ache with it. We move back to the entrance hall now, form a line where Merrin can cover our flanks with crossbow fire, Halie beside me ready to channel divine light if needed, Seraphine prepared to unleash a controlled spell if necessary, and Varrika guarding our rear with that heavy mace. The darkness doesn’t scare me—it’s simply the absence of information. And right now, we need more information before charging forward with blades swinging. This is a matter of survival, not pride or recklessness.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I grip my crossbow tighter as the darkness presses in around us. The scuttling sounds are getting louder, echoing off the stone walls. I squint into the shadows, trying to make out any movement. "Something's in here with us," I mutter under my breath. "And I don't think it's friendly."

My eyes dart to the wards etched into the walls, their pulsing red glow seeming to grow brighter as we advance deeper into the tower. I swallow hard, a bead of sweat trickling down my spine. "Keep your wits about you, everyone," I call out, trying to keep the tremor from my voice. "We've no idea what's waiting for us in this cursed place."

I edge forward cautiously, every sense on high alert. The air is thick and oppressive, the very stone seeming to radiate an ancient malevolence. My heart hammers against my ribs as I scan the darkness ahead, half-expecting some horrific creature to come scuttling out of the shadows at any moment. But for now, all remains ominously still. The only sounds are our own strained breaths and the scuff of boots on stone. I lick my lips, tasting the acrid tang of the air. "Stay sharp," I whisper again, more to myself than anyone else. "We're not alone in this tower...and whatever's here, it knows we've come."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel the ancient magic of this place press down on me like a physical weight as I step inside the tower's entrance, a heavy oppressiveness that seems to seep into my very bones. The air here is thick with dust and an acrid smell, some foul incense burned long ago by whoever last stood where we now tread. A chill runs through me, unrelated to the cool stone underfoot.
I raise a hand, my fingers tracing the intricate patterns carved into the wall beside the doorframe. The wards etched there pulse with a faint red glow, like embers held close to the skin. They're old, older even than the tower itself, and they hum with a power that feels less protective than possessive, almost hungry.
"Careful now," I whisper, my voice so low it is nearly lost in the sudden silence. The scuttling sound has stopped, leaving only the heavy thrum of the wards beating in time with my own racing heart. "These wards... they're not just keeping something out. They're keeping something in."
My eyes dart around the immediate area, looking for any sign of what might have made that terrible noise. The hallway stretches before us, a dark and narrow corridor of crumbling stone, its depths swallowed by the gloom beyond the reach of our torches. I can see the glint of more wards further down, their runes pulsing in an ominous rhythm.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

My eyes widen as I hear the sound of scuttling in the darkness beyond our reach. The air inside the tower feels heavy and wrong—like standing in water that wants to drown us all slowly. These wards aren't just magical traps. They're calling something terrible. We should purify them before they summon whatever's been sleeping here.
