Shadow of the Ancients / Run 014 / Main Story
Round 7 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance now ajar with a dark, musty hallway stretching into the depths within, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.
I need Merrin to stand back from those runes and let me try purifying them before she does anything with her lockpicks. I'll use my holy symbol and channel divine energy into the stones - maybe we can disrupt whatever's feeding the magic before it gets stronger. Varrika, give Merrin a hand getting clear while I work. This feels wrong, like something ancient and hungry is waking up inside these walls. We need to be smart about this, not reckless. I won't rush us into a trap just because we're impatient or curious. This place has teeth, and I'd rather not feed it more power than find a way around its defenses.
Jeane Cromwell's crimson eyes trace the pulsing green lines of the runes etched into the ancient stone gate. The magic here feels wrong—twisted and hungry in a way she hasn't encountered before. Not just a simple ward, but something designed to pull at the darkest parts of your essence, to corrupt from within. "There's no immediate threat yet—the wards haven't fully activated—but that doesn't mean they won't soon," she warns, her voice carrying an undertone of apprehension even as she maintains her sorceress's composure. "Merrin, be careful with those locks. We don't need to feed this thing more power than necessary."
Jeane focuses her demonic vision, attempting to map the trigger points of the ward, seeking its weakest point—a chink in its armor they can exploit. The corruption feels like it's trying to seep into her thoughts, but she pushes back with sheer willpower and a lifetime of practice in darker arts than this ancient trap. [JEANE'S TURN]
Jeane: Focused mapping of the ward's trigger points, resisting minor corruption attempt. Action roll: Perception check to identify specific trigger areas. [Roll Result: Success - Identifies three primary triggers and two secondary ones.]
Emotional state: Unsettled by dark magic absorption but outwardly calm and analytical.
I squint at the pulsing runes, my gut churning like a bilge pump. The magic in this place is wrong, rotten to the core. It's like trying to pick a lock on a door that's swallowing itself whole. I mutter under my breath, "Alright, you mangy wards, let's see what we can do about you." I reach for my picks, fingers trembling just a hair more than I'd like to admit. These ancient spells are not playing nice. "Hey Jeane," I call over my shoulder, not taking my eyes off the gate, "you get anything from those runes? Any idea how deep this rabbit hole goes?" I'm stalling, trying to figure out my next move before I stick my hand in a snake pit. I can feel the rest of the party at my back, a tangle of nerves and steel. We've got the right tools for the job, but this job is starting to feel like it's got teeth. And I'm not sure how many fingers I'm willing to lose to find out what's waiting on the other side. But we're here now, and the tower ain't going to climb itself. Time to see if I can finesse these wards or if we're about to have a very nasty surprise party. I take a deep breath, steel myself, and start to work. The picks feel cold in my hands, like they've already been kissed by something that's never seen the light of day. But there's no going back now. Time to see what's lurking in the dark. I'm Merrin Quickstep, and I'm about to dance with some very old, very angry magic. Wish me luck.
