Round 96 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika steadies herself on the narrow stairs, her eyes dart towards the darkness below, her hand instinctively reaching for the hilt of her lost mace. The air is heavy with the stench of decay and something else – a metallic tang that seems to sear her nostrils. Halie's holy symbol casts flickering shadows on the walls, making it seem like the very stones are twisted and writhing in agony. The ground beneath Varrika's feet begins to shift, the stone crumbling into jagged slabs as the staircase collapses around her. She tumbles down the stairs, the silence broken by the sound of crashing stone and screeching metal. When she finally comes to a stop, she finds herself in a large, dimly lit chamber filled with a noxious gas that makes her eyes burn. The room is dominated by a massive, crystalline structure at its center, pulsating with an otherworldly energy that seems to be drawing the very life force from the air. The Time-Splitting Sword lies across its surface, casting an ethereal glow in the darkness.
I feel it too—the tower is alive with hunger. Every stone seems to watch us. That central rune is pulsing now, and I swear the darkness between its lines shifts when we look at it directly. Varrika, you're right about Merrin—whatever's down there, she can't face it alone. But neither of us should descend into what's clearly a death trap staircase. Let me cast Detect Magic first to map out any active threats before we take another step downward.
I descend carefully, my holy symbol ready to dispel any lingering evil spirits. The air here feels wrong—something ancient and hungry. Varrika, can you steady yourself? This place is no good. Jeane has a point. We need the sword, but not at Merrin's price.
I brace myself against the crumbling wall, my heart pounding in my chest as the stairs shift beneath my feet. The air is thick with the stench of decay, and I can feel an ancient malevolence seeping into my bones. "Halie!" I call out, my voice echoing off the stone walls. "Keep that symbol of yours ready. We don't know what we're walking into down here."
I steady myself, gripping my mace tightly in my scarred hands. The weight of it grounds me, reminds me of all the battles I've fought and survived. But even with all my experience, I can't shake the feeling that this tower is different. It's alive in a way I've never encountered before, and it seems to be hungering for something... or someone. I glance back at Jeane, her face etched with concern. "Jeane, keep your eyes peeled for any traps. This place feels like it's just waiting for us to slip up."
Merrin is somewhere behind us, her silence more unnerving than any of the tower's other dangers. I know the curse is spreading, but there's nothing we can do about that now. All we can focus on is retrieving the Time-Splitting Sword and getting out of here alive. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever horrors await us in the depths below. "Alright, let's move," I say, my gravel-voiced words echoing off the walls. "But be careful. We don't need any more accidents on these stairs."
With that, I start to descend, my mace at the ready and my senses on high alert. The tower may be hungry, but I'll be damned if I let it have us without a fight.
