As Halie reaches for her crossbow, the ground beneath her feet lurches violently once more, causing her to stumble. The sound of crashing stone echoes through the chamber, and a section of the wall near her begins to crumble, sending dust and debris swirling towards her. The central rune pulsates brighter still, its power coursing through the air like an electric current. Halie's crossbow falls from her grasp as she struggles to maintain her balance, her hands clenching into fists to prevent herself from being swept away by the falling debris. The air is thick with dust, making it difficult for anyone to see more than a few feet in front of them. The tower's instability seems to be focusing its attention on Halie, and she must decide how to proceed in this treacherous environment.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I can feel the sword's curse spreading through the stone itself now—Merrin was right about this place being sick with magic that wants to devour us whole—and we're standing at the top of a death-trap staircase because of course we are. Halie, love, whatever you felt in those shadows? It's not just my imagination. Something old and hungry is waiting down there, and I'm starting to think Merrin might have been its appetizer instead of our main course. The rune's pulsing faster now—brighter—and I swear I can taste copper on the back of my tongue. We don't need to be heroes. We don't need to be martyrs. But we do need to survive this cursed tower, which means not adding our own bones to whatever collection Merrin joined. I'm all for retrieving the sword if it'll lift this curse from us, but at what cost? Are we ready to gamble with our souls just because one of us already lost hers? If anyone's got a plan that doesn't involve us all ending up as ghost stories, now would be the time to share it. Otherwise I suggest we back the fuck away before whatever's down there decides dessert tastes better than appetizers.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie's hand instinctively moves toward her crossbow when she feels the wrongness in the shadows, but she stops herself. "We don't know what it is," she says to no one in particular, her voice tight with controlled fear. "Touching it might make it worse." She glances at Jeane, then Varrika, searching their faces for agreement or dissent. "We need to think this through. The sword's curse... it's spreading beyond Merrin now, and I don't know how to stop it. This feels like a trap we're not meant to survive." Her fingers trace the outline of her holy symbol. "Merrin wouldn't want us all consumed just because she—" She cuts herself off, unable to finish the thought.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I step forward cautiously, my heavy mace gripped tight in my scarred hands. The air is thick with ancient magic and an unnatural hunger that sets my teeth on edge. I can feel the tower itself pulsing with malevolent power, like a beast waiting to devour us whole. "Hold," I grunt at Halie as she reaches for her crossbow. "No need to startle whatever's lurking in these shadows. Not yet." My eyes scan the crumbling stairs ahead, searching for any sign of movement or threat. Jeane's words echo in my mind - Merrin might have been just the first course for whatever's waiting below. The thought turns my stomach, but I can't deny the possibility. That dwarven fool may have doomed us all with her recklessness. I meet Halie's gaze, seeing my own apprehension reflected back at me. "We've come this far," I say quietly. "No going back now unless we want to run from our own ghosts." My jaw sets grimly as I take another step down into the abyss. "Stay sharp. Keep your holy symbol ready. And for the love of the gods, don't trust anything ancient or magical. It's all cursed."

My heart pounds a warning, but I silence it. We've come too far to turn back now, even if death and madness wait at the bottom of these stairs. The sword must be stopped, Merrin's fate avenged, and whatever power holds this accursed tower broken. And if the gods are smiling, we might all live to tell the tale. I raise my mace and continue my descent into the unknown, praying to any deity still listening that I'm not leading us all to our doom. The only thing certain is that we'll face the darkness together, or not at all.
