The air in the crumbling stone tower grew thick with an otherworldly energy that made Jeane's skin crawl. The destabilizing rune on the floor pulsed brighter, casting an eerie blue glow across the chamber as the walls began to shudder ominously. Suddenly, the ground beneath Varrika’s feet gave way, and she stumbled into a hidden pit, disappearing from view.

The group was left standing in the pit, staring down at Varrika's legs dangling in mid-air. The darkness seemed to close in around them, and the oppressive silence of the ancient magic pressed down like a physical weight. Jeane forced her wings tight against her back, the feathers aching as if pressed against hot coals. Every instinct screamed at her to retreat before whatever hungry thing stirred below them, but she'd come too far for caution alone.

"The central rune pulses brighter with each moment we stand here debating," Jeane said, her voice strained. "Whatever lies at the bottom of that staircase likely reacts to our presence. I will go down alone." The thought of Merrin's curse spreading through the party made her stomach turn—she'd rather face whatever waited below than sacrifice them one by one.

Halie clutched her holy symbol tighter, feeling its heat intensify. "I won't let us linger here while Varrika fights for her life beneath our feet and Merrin... whatever's happening to her... I can feel it spreading already." The air in this cursed chamber was thick enough to choke on, and she wouldn't let them die here over a damned sword.

"I'm not leaving you down there alone!" Varrika called up from the pit. "We face this together or not at all. The gases are too thick—breathing them is suicide without protection." She stared down into the pit, her heart pounding in her chest as the poisonous gases swirled and churned, an unholy mix of acrid smoke and sickly green light.

Jeane grit her teeth, the phantom touches of magic across her skin making her want to vomit. "Fine. But we move fast." The rune's pulsing wasn't natural—something was reacting to them being here. "We go down, find Varrika, and get out before whatever's at the bottom decides it wants company."

Halie began to pray, her voice steady despite the oppressive atmosphere. "Let me try something—maybe a blessing of protection or a purifying spell to clear the air." She wasn't about to charge into an obvious death trap blindly.

Varrika watched as Halie began her prayers, his voice steady despite the oppressive atmosphere. "Careful, girl. We don't know what might be listening down there."

He began to descend slowly, his senses straining against the thick magic that clung to everything like oil on water. The stairs seemed to go on forever, each step echoing ominously in the oppressive silence. Finally, he reached the bottom and found himself in a small chamber, the air even thicker here, almost viscous with power.

In the center of the room lay a stone altar, and upon it—

Varrika froze, his heart hammering in his chest. The Time-Splitting Sword lay there, its blade pulsing with an inner light that seemed to beat in time with the central rune above. But surrounding it were intricate patterns of what could only be described as... hunger. Magic that wanted, needed, something.

(Next round: The Curse of the Sword (spreading, active on Merrin) - The magical backlash is immediate and devastating. The air crackles with raw power as the sword's aura flares outwards in a visible wave of dark energy. Merrin screams, her body arching backwards as the curse intensifies, tendrils of shadow coiling around her limbs and chest. The other party members feel it too—the magic lashing outwards like a physical blow that makes their skin crawl and their teeth ache.)

(Varrika is standing at the bottom of a staircase in a cursed chamber deep within an ancient stone tower. The air is thick with oppressive magic that makes his skin itch and his head throb. He can feel the ancient power pulsing beneath his feet, a malevolent heartbeat that seems to beat in time with the central rune above. The stone altar before him holds the Time-Splitting Sword, its blade glowing with an inner light that promises salvation or damnation.)
