A faint hum emanates from the walls as a destabilizing rune on the floor begins to pulse brighter, casting an eerie blue glow across the chamber. The air thickens with an otherworldly energy, and the group can feel the curse of the Time-Splitting Sword spreading, its influence now palpable even without Merrin's presence. As the rune's power intensifies, the walls start to shudder, and a section of the floor gives way, revealing a narrow opening that leads deeper into the tower. The sound of creaking stone and the stench of rotting wood fill the air, and the group realizes they must choose their next move before the entire chamber collapses. The opening is just large enough for Jeane to squeeze through, but it's uncertain whether she'll find the Time-Splitting Sword on the other side. Varrika stands guard, ready to defend her companions if necessary, while Halie's eyes dart nervously between the unstable rune and the widening chasm.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I force my wings tight against my back, the feathers aching as if pressed against hot coals. Every instinct screams at me to retreat before whatever hungry thing stirs below us in that darkness. The oppressive magic clings to the walls like a malevolent presence, and I can feel it seeping into my bones. I meet Halie's worried gaze across the chamber—her fear is contagious but grounding. We cannot let Merrin descend those stairs with that curse consuming her. "The central rune pulses brighter with each moment," I say, keeping my voice steady despite the panic rising in my throat. "Whatever lies at the bottom of that staircase likely reacts to our presence."

Varrika's practicality cuts through the tension. "Searching the chamber is wiser than walking into a obvious death-trap." She's right, of course—my succubus nature values survival above all else, even if it means leaving Merrin behind for now. But something in me balks at abandoning her so easily. The way she trusts us with that reckless bravery... I won't let her die before we've had our fun together. "If there is no other way," I say, my voice softer than intended, "I will go down alone. I am better equipped to withstand such magic than any of you."

The ancient death magic thickening in the air makes my skin crawl—something down there wants us, and it's not for tea and pleasant conversation. We need that sword lifted from this cursed place, but at what cost?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I cannot let Jeane go alone into such obvious death. The goddess of light did not make me her handmaiden for this—no, I have my own purpose here. (beat) I am no warrior, but my faith offers more than just healing. Let me check this rune with a symbol of purification first. If it reacts badly, at least only one of us gets corrupted. (softly, to Varrika and Jeane) We stick together. Merrin's sacrifice should not be in vain—we retrieve that sword or we leave it. But I will not touch it myself, nor let any of you keep it either. There has to be a way past this without succumbing to its curse. The air thickens with magic I can taste. We're running out of time in this collapsing ruin. Let me pray for guidance first—quickly—and then we act as one.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I eye the pulsing rune warily. The ancient magic feels wrong, tainted. That staircase likely leads to a death trap, and whatever lies at the bottom wants us...I don't know what, but it won't be good. My gaze flicks to Merrin, her face etched with determination even as the curse consumes her from within. I can't let her go down those stairs alone. The Time-Splitting Sword is too dangerous, its power too tempting. We all know what happened to the last order of knights who tried to wield it. I turn to Jeane, the sorcerer's eyes blazing with a fire I've never seen before. "If you're set on going down there alone, fine. But we're searching this chamber first. There has to be another way."

My hand tightens on my mace, the weight of it familiar and reassuring. I'm tired, we all are, but I won't let exhaustion cloud my judgment. Not now, not with so much at stake. I meet Halie's gaze, seeing my own fear reflected in her eyes. "Stay close to me," I murmur. "We'll find a way through this together."

The dwarf in me yearns for solid ground and the weight of stone above my head. But the warrior in me knows we have no choice but to press on. Whatever lies ahead, we'll face it together or not at all. I take a deep breath, the air thick with the stench of magic and decay. "Alright then," I say, squaring my shoulders. "Let's see what secrets this chamber holds."
