The ancient magic in the chamber thickens, pressing down with physical weight as the central rune pulses brighter still. Jeane forces her wings tight against her back, feathers aching as if pressed against hot coals—the oppressive energy making her skin crawl with phantom touches. Every instinct screams at her to flee this cursed place before whatever hungry thing stirs below climbs up to investigate their presence. But she stands frozen, paralyzed by the rising panic yet grounding herself through sheer will alone.

Halie's torch sputters out dramatically, plunging them into darkness save for the eerie green pulse from below. Her holy symbol vibrates intensely, growing hot against her chest—this is wrong, deeply wrong, a primal dread that has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with the ancient power emanating from the depths of this accursed tower. The very air tastes of decay and death, thick with magical corruption that makes her skin itch and her stomach turn.

Varrika descends the narrow staircase into the cursed depths, senses straining against the ancient malevolence that clings to every stone surface like a shroud. She shields the others from the noxious fumes rising from the crack in the wall—poisonous, acrid, burning her eyes and choking her breath with each inhalation. The central rune pulses with sickly green light—brighter since entering this chamber—and she can feel it pulling, a dark hunger that grows stronger with each moment they remain.

"We cannot go down there," Jeane states flatly, though her voice trembles slightly. "The magic is wrong—poisonous." Her crimson eyes flick to Merrin's twisted form on the floor, then back to Halie and Varrika. "That staircase leads to death. I can feel it."

Halie shakes her head vehemently, her blue-grey eyes wide with fear but her voice firm. "I'm not going down that death-trap staircase. It's suicide and solves nothing." She clutches her holy symbol tighter. "We need another way—or we leave Merrin behind." Her gaze drops to the cursed sword on Merrin's back, then back up to Varrika's face. "I won't be party to her murder by magical curiosity. My faith doesn't work on tombs that hate the living."

Varrika meets Jeane's eyes, then Halie's, her scarred face set in grim determination despite the noxious fumes making her eyes water. The weight of Merrin's curse pulses like a sickening heartbeat, and she feels the burden of that accursed sword on the thief's back. We can't let her take those stairs. "Alright, we search the chamber," she growls, her voice rough with barely contained fear and frustration. "But if there's no other way..." She trails off, not wanting to voice the unthinkable. Merrin is one of us. But that sword... it's poison. And it's spreading.

The central rune pulses again, feeding on their terror and indecision—brighter still this time. Something shifts below—the scrape of stone against stone, a low rumble that vibrates through the floor itself. Whatever lay waiting down there has sensed their presence now, and it is hungry.
