As Varrika takes another step down the winding staircase, the air thickens with an almost palpable sense of urgency. The central rune's sickly green light pulses brighter, casting an eerie glow on the dusty artifacts and tomes scattered about the small chamber. The weight of the tower presses down upon Varrika like a suffocating blanket, and she can feel the ancient magic coursing through the stones, as if the very structure is alive with malevolence. Suddenly, a faint whisper echoes through the chamber, seemingly emanating from the artifacts themselves. The voice is barely audible, but its malevolent intent is unmistakable: "Turn back while you still can." Varrika's mace trembles in her hand as she hears Halie's urgent words, "Varrika, stop! Let me scout ahead with magic—warding spells at least, maybe a scrying if I can manage it through this interference."

Merrin's convulsions have slowed, but the air around her seems to be charged with an otherworldly energy, as if she's become a focal point for the curse's dark power. The pressure builds, and Varrika must decide: will she heed the warning and turn back, or press on into the unknown depths of the tower?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I grab Varrika's arm, pull her back from the edge. "Stop! We don't know what's down there—what this curse is doing already and you're walking into more." I turn to Jeane. "I can try a spell to ward whatever's waiting below. Maybe even get a glimpse if the interference lets up. But we need Merrin steady first."

I kneel beside Merrin, silver holy symbol in hand. Her convulsions have slowed but her breathing is ragged, wrong somehow—too many intakes and releases like she's trying to breathe with extra lungs that aren't there yet. The air around her does feel charged, hungry. I start a simple prayer for stamina and fortitude, hands hovering near her skin without touching. "This thing feeds on desperation," I mutter to the stone floor as much as the group. "We need options before we commit to more of this." The central rune pulses again, brighter this time—definitely responding to our presence or intentions. "And that light... it's not natural. Magic like this doesn't just sit around in ruins. Someone put it here."

I look up at Varrika and Jeane in turn. "We need Merrin conscious and moving if we're going down there. And someone needs to be ready to yank us all back if the stairs start collapsing or worse." My hand hovers near my crossbow, though I hate even thinking about using it inside this place. "This isn't just a tomb anymore. It's active."

The air shifts, getting colder around the edges despite the heat rising from below. Or maybe that's just the dread settling into my bones. "Let me try the warding spell first," I say more firmly than intended. "If I can see what's waiting, we might find a better way to deal with... whatever this is." I hate being the one to suggest hesitation when every instinct screams for action. But inaction is just as much of a decision—one that might spare us all.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I feel it too—this ravenous presence beneath us, and Varikka descending into its mouth like an offering. Stop! Pull back before you become another casualty on this cursed staircase! Merrin's time burns away with each passing breath, her mind fraying under that ancient rot spreading through her veins like poisoned honey. We need the sword—yes—but not at the cost of our lives! Let me scout ahead with magic, warding spells at least if I can manage them through this interference. The central rune pulses brighter with every step taken down those winding stones, feeding on our desperation or maybe just reveling in it. This isn't bravery—this is suicide by staircase! If we all die here, Merrin's sacrifice means nothing! Halie kneeling beside her, trying to keep what remains of our healer grounded while I watch Varikka walk straight into the maw of this tower's hunger. We're not martyrs for some cursed blade—I won't let us become another cautionary tale in these ruins!

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I feel the tower's ancient magic pulsing through me, an insidious energy that seems to reach into my very bones. The stairs stretch out before us, winding down into the depths of this accursed place. Every instinct screams at me to turn back, to flee this nightmare and its hungry presence. But Merrin... her life is slipping away with every passing moment. The curse consumes her mind and body, leaving only a twisted shell behind. We have no choice but to push forward, to find the Time-Splitting Sword and lift this burden from our shoulders. I grip my mace tighter, feeling its weight in my calloused hands. The weapon has seen its share of battles, but never has it faced an enemy quite like this. Magic swirls around us, thick and oppressive, choking the air from my lungs. Halie's warning echoes in my ears, a desperate plea to turn back before it's too late. But what future awaits us if we retreat? Merrin will die, her fate sealed by the very curse we sought to lift. And what of the others? Jeane, with her sorcerous might and brash courage. Halie, so young and innocent, thrust into this nightmare against her will. No, there is no going back. Only forward, into the unknown depths of this tower and the horrors it surely holds. The path ahead is shrouded in darkness, but we must face it together, or not at all.
