Round 73 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Varrika's boots echo off the stone walls as she takes another step down the winding staircase, the air thickening with the stench of decay and corruption. The central rune pulses brighter, its sickly green light casting eerie shadows on the walls. The tower groans and creaks around her, the sound growing louder with each passing moment. Merrin's convulsions have slowed, but her body remains twisted in unnatural spasms, her eyes frozen in a permanent stare. Halie's voice carries faintly from above, her words a distant echo of concern, urging Varrika to proceed with caution. The stairway tightens further, forcing Varrika to slow her pace. As she rounds a bend, the staircase opens onto a small chamber, the ceiling lost in darkness. A faint, flickering glow emanates from the far corner, casting an otherworldly light on the room's contents. Varrika's eyes adjust slowly, revealing a collection of ancient artifacts and dusty tomes, their covers adorned with strange symbols that seem to shimmer in the dim light.
The central rune pulses again, brighter now, pulsing in time with Merrin's convulsions—her body twitching like a marionette controlled by something unseen. I can feel it too: this hungry presence stirring beneath us, drawn to our desperation or maybe just feasting on it. We need to retrieve that cursed sword before whatever's down there finishes consuming her—and us by extension—but Varrika charging straight into that death-trap staircase? That's not a plan, that's suicide. The tower groans around us, dust raining from the ceiling in alarming volume now, and I can barely breathe through this thick air. I grab Halie's arm as she stumbles—she's right to be afraid; we should all be terrified—and pull her back from the edge. "Stop!" My voice cuts through the groaning stone, sharp enough that even Varrika pauses mid-step on that treacherous stair. "We agreed—no more charging into obvious death traps!"
The crossbow feels heavy in my grip, useless against whatever ancient evil waits below but better than nothing. I spread my wings instinctively—the feathers ache with every pulse from the rune—and try to focus through this oppressive magic that makes my skin crawl and my teeth itch. "Look at her!" I gesture toward Merrin's contorting form where she lies nearby, barely conscious now as the curse shreds her mind along with whatever else it's consuming. "The curse spreads faster every minute we're in this cursed chamber! Varrika, I know you want to help her—but that staircase is obviously booby-trapped. We need a real plan before—"
Before what? Before we all join Merrin in whatever hell awaits at the bottom of those stairs? The central rune pulses again, and something cold slithers down my spine—not just magic backlash but intention, like the tower itself is watching us. I force myself to meet Varrika's gaze despite the distance between us. "Let me scout ahead with magic—warding spells at least, maybe a scrying if I can manage it through this interference. We know where the sword is; we don't need to rush straight into whatever's waiting down there." My wings twitch with barely controlled anxiety but my voice remains steady despite the fear coiling tight in my gut. "Please—let me try something smarter before we all walk to our deaths, yes?"
I tighten my grip on the mace, the rough wood of the handle digging into my calloused palm as I take another step down the winding staircase. The weight of the tower presses down upon me like a suffocating blanket, and I can feel the ancient magic pulsing through the stones, as if the very structure is alive with malevolence. Halie's words echo in my mind - we need a plan. A real one. But what choice do we have? Merrin's time grows short, and the curse spreads faster now with each passing moment. I can see it in the way her body convulses, twisting unnaturally as if something is trying to burst out from within. The central rune pulses brighter, its sickly green light illuminating the staircase's smooth stone surface. It seems to beckon me forward, drawing me deeper into the heart of the tower and whatever horrors may lie in wait. But I cannot turn back now. Not when we are so close to our goal. I take another step down, my heavy boots echoing in the enclosed space. The air grows thick with the scent of decay and ancient magic, and I can feel a tingling sensation on my skin as if the very atmosphere is charged with energy. Ahead, the staircase winds tighter, the walls closing in around me like a suffocating tomb. But I press on, my mace at the ready, prepared to face whatever challenges may lie ahead. For I am Varrika Thornwake, and I will not let my companions fall prey to this cursed thing. I take another step down into the unknown depths of the tower, my heart pounding in my chest as I descend into the abyss.
