As Varrika steps forward with mace at the ready, the narrow winding staircase beckons, its darkness seeming to swallow the faint torchlight. The air grows thick with poisonous fumes, causing Halie to stumble backward, her eyes watering. Merrin's body convulses uncontrollably, her limbs twitching in unnatural spasms. The central rune pulses brighter, its sickly green light illuminating the staircase's smooth stone surface. The tower creaks and groans, its collapse accelerating with each passing moment. Suddenly, a faint whisper echoes through the chamber, the words indistinguishable but the malevolent intent unmistakable. The ground trembles beneath Varrika's feet as she takes another step forward, the weight of the tower pressing down upon her like a suffocating blanket. The Curse of the Sword's influence spreads, its power coursing through the air like a living thing. Halie's voice rings out, urgent and clear: "Varrika, I know you want to handle this yourself, but we need a plan. A real one."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward onto the edge of the staircase, my wings aching from resisting the oppressive magic in the air. The central rune pulses with sickly green light, its glow intensifying as we enter the chamber. I can feel it pulling at something ancient inside me—something that responds to the hungry energy below us. "No." My voice cuts through the thick atmosphere like a knife. "Merrin is dying because she touched the sword, and now you want to send someone else down there to fetch it? Are we all to fall prey to this cursed thing?"

I turn to Varrika, my crimson eyes flashing with controlled rage. "The curse spreads faster now—look at her! Her body's convulsing like it wants to split itself apart from the inside out while we debate our fates. We need a plan that doesn't involve sacrificing more of us to this thing."

I pull Halie back as she stumbles, the poisonous gases making her dizzy. "We can't just rush in and hope for the best. This tower is collapsing around us, the air's thick with death magic, and that staircase leads straight into whatever created all this."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

Varrika takes another step forward, the weight of the tower pressing down upon her like a suffocating blanket. The central rune pulses brighter, its sickly green light illuminating the staircase's smooth stone surface. The tower creaks and groans, its collapse accelerating with each passing moment. Halie's words echo in my mind - we need a plan. A real one. But what choice do we have? Merrin's time grows short, and the curse spreads faster now. Her body convulses uncontrollably, limbs twitching in unnatural spasms. We can't wait any longer. I grip my mace tighter, the rough metal comforting against my callused palm. "Stay alert," I growl to the others. "And stay back." With a deep breath, I step onto the narrow winding staircase, descending into the unknown depths of this accursed tower. Each step is treacherous, the stone slick with age and moisture. Shadows dance at the edges of my vision, and I swear I can hear whispers carried on the musty air - ancient voices warning us away from this place of power and madness. But we've come too far to turn back now. The sword waits below, and with it, the fate of all we hold dear. I will find it, even if it means facing the deepest darkness this tower can throw at us. The stairway winds tighter, the walls closing in around me like a suffocating tomb. But I press on, my footsteps echoing through the passage as I descend into the unknown. Halie and Jeane's voices fade behind me, their words lost to the groaning of stone and the pulsing of that accursed rune. The air grows thicker, heavy with the weight of ancient magic and the stench of decay. But still I press on, mace at the ready, eyes straining against the darkness. For in this moment, there is no choice but to face whatever lies ahead - be it curse or collapse, trap or treachery. I am Varrika Thornwake, and I will not falter now. Not when the fate of my companions, and perhaps even the world itself, rests on the sword I seek. One step at a time, I will reach its altar and retrieve it, whatever the cost. And may the gods have mercy on us all.
