As Jeane leads the way down the winding staircase, the air thickens with an even more oppressive malevolent energy. The central rune's sickly green light intensifies, casting flickering shadows on the walls. With each step, Merrin's contortions become more frantic, her cries for help growing hoarse as her body twists in agony. Halie's Protection spell holds, but its effects begin to wane, and Varrika readies her crossbow, prepared to face whatever horrors lie at the bottom of the staircase. Suddenly, a low rumble echoes through the chamber, causing the floor to shudder beneath Jeane's feet. The ground gives way, and a section of the staircase collapses, revealing a dark, narrow pit. The air from the depths is heavy with noxious fumes, and a faint whispering seems to emanate from the void. Merrin, now unconscious, slides towards the edge of the pit, her twisted body teetering on the brink of collapse.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The central rune pulses again—brighter this time—and I have to fight every instinct screaming at me to retreat before whatever hungry thing stirs below has us for dinner. Merrin staggers back from the pit's edge, her body contorting in ways that make my stomach turn. Her eyes bulge with terror as she cries out for Halie to cast the Protection spell. I can see it—the ancient hunger awakening deep within her soul, threatening to overwhelm what remains of her humanity. But we can't just stand here while she transforms into something monstrous right before our eyes. The curse is spreading too fast—Halie's Protection Against Evil might buy us seconds at best. We need to act now or Merrin could be lost to us already. I tighten my grip on the Time-Splitting Sword, its cursed blade gleaming with malevolent energy that makes my skin crawl. "Wait," I say sharply as Halie begins her incantation. "Think about what you're doing. If that sword falls into our hands, how long before we start turning on each other? We need to find another way."

Varrika's crossbow clicks as she readies it, covering the winding staircase that descends into darkness below. The air itself seems to thicken with an ancient malevolence that makes my wings ache and my stomach churn. Something old and hungry lies beneath us—something that doesn't want us retrieving whatever cursed artifact awaits at the bottom. We're trapped between the curse consuming Merrin above and whatever hellish thing dwells below. The tower groans around us, stone grinding against stone as if the very structure itself is eager to collapse and bury us alive. I take a step forward, toward the mouth of the newly discovered tunnel that Halie's light revealed. The air here seems cleaner—less thick with corruption—but the stench of decay still lingers. If we can just get through this passage without triggering whatever magical defenses protect what lies beyond... "Varrika," I call over my shoulder, "cover the staircase—if anything crawls up from below, put it down before it gets close enough to touch any of us." My wings strain against the thick energy emanating from the central rune, every feather aching as if plucked one by one. Merrin's condition worsens with each passing moment, her body contorting in ways that defy nature. Halie's Protection spell shimmers around her like a fragile bubble about to burst. We need to stabilize her now—or at least find somewhere safer to contain the curse before it spreads further. The ground shifts beneath my feet as another section of the staircase collapses, revealing yet another pit below. Merrin teeters on the brink, her eyes wide with terror as she begs for Halie's intervention. I look back at our cleric, noting the exhaustion in her posture despite the urgency of the situation. "Halie," I say, my voice barely containing the rising panic, "cast your spell—we can't let Merrin fall to this curse. But once you've stabilized her, we need to talk about how to retrieve that sword without keeping it for ourselves."

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I watch Merrin's body twist unnaturally, the silver light of my Protection spell fading faster than I expected. The air here is wrong—thick with something ancient and hungry. This curse moves like quicksilver through veins; Halie's magic might buy us moments, not minutes. We need to act, but acting feels dangerous. Every instinct screams at me to run, to abandon this cursed place, yet running means leaving Merrin to whatever's consuming her, and that I cannot do. "Jeane," I say softly, my voice barely carrying over the creaking stone around us, "I don't think keeping that sword is the answer. Whatever power it has, it's poisoned." My hand moves instinctively toward one of my healing potions—useless against this corruption—but the gesture feels hollow. "We need to find another way."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The air in the chamber grows heavy with an ancient, malevolent presence. I can feel it seeping into my bones, whispering promises of power and damnation. My hand tightens on the hilt of my mace as I scan the shadowy corners for any sign of movement. "Alright, listen up," I growl, my voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "We're not leaving this place until we have that sword, but we're not fools enough to think it'll be easy." My eyes lock with each member of the party in turn, gauging their resolve. "Halie, keep your holy symbol ready. We might need a quick prayer before we're out of here." The cleric nods, her fingers tracing the silver lines of her amulet. "Jeane, I want you on point with that crossbow. If anything bigger than a rat comes scurrying out of the dark, make sure it doesn't get any closer." The archer gives me a sharp nod, her eyes already scanning the edges of the room. "And Merrin..." I turn to face the rogue, my expression grim. "I know that sword is calling to you, but don't let it cloud your judgment. We need you sharp and focused if we're going to make it out of here alive."

The rogue meets my gaze, a spark of defiance in her eyes even as she nods her understanding. I can see the strain of the curse etched into the lines of her face, but I know better than to offer empty words of comfort. "Alright then," I say, taking a step forward into the unknown. "Let's find that damn sword and get out of this accursed place before it swallows us whole."
