The central rune pulsed again, its sickly green light growing brighter with each passing moment. The air in the chamber seemed to thicken, pressing in on them like a physical weight. Jeane's wings beat uselessly against the oppressive energy that filled the space, her skin crawling as the magical field resisted her every attempt to push through it. She could feel something ancient and hungry stirring beneath them—something that had been dormant for centuries but was now awakening, fed by Merrin's suffering.

"Fuck!" Jeane hissed, her crimson eyes wide with barely contained panic. Every instinct screamed at her to flee, to abandon this cursed place before whatever slept below could fully awaken and consume them all. But she couldn't—wouldn't—leave Merrin to face whatever fate awaited the rogue alone. The halfling woman was twisted on the ground now, her body contorting in ways that no living creature should be capable of, her screams echoing off the stone walls as another wave of transformation ripped through her.

"Halie! Cast Protection on all of us—now!" Jeane barked, her voice cracking with barely controlled fear. The cleric nodded grimly, her hands already moving into the familiar gestures of a powerful ward spell. Light flared around them, driving back the shadows and momentarily weakening the oppressive atmosphere. But it wasn't enough—the central rune pulsed again, brighter this time, and a low rumble echoed up from below.

Merrin collapsed to the ground, her body twisting in ways that no living creature should be capable of. The curse had spread further now, consuming more of her flesh with each passing second. Her muscles bulged unnaturally beneath her skin, straining against the fabric of her leathers as they grew and shifted in response to the dark magic coursing through her veins.

"Halie!" Merrin gasped, fighting to stay conscious as another wave of agony washed over her. "The spell—cast it now! I can feel it... changing me." Her eyes bulged wide with terror as she felt something ancient and alien begin to take root inside her mind, twisting her thoughts into shapes they weren't meant to take.

Halie's fingers moved through the air, weaving a pattern of light that swirled around Merrin's writhing form. The divine energy shimmered against her skin for a moment before being absorbed into her flesh, but the effect was minimal—the curse pulsed once more, stronger this time, and Merrin screamed in agony as another wave of transformation ripped through her body.

"Varrika," Jeane said, her voice low and dangerous, "cover that staircase. If anything crawls up from below, put it down before it gets close enough to touch any of us. Especially Merrin." The towering succubus woman's wings beat the air furiously, her entire being focused on maintaining a barrier between her friends and whatever lay beneath them.

The ground rumbled again, more insistently this time, and a section of the wall slid open with a grating sound, revealing a narrow, winding tunnel. A faint glow emanated from the depths of the passage, casting flickering shadows across the chamber's stone floor. Jeane felt her stomach drop as she realized what it meant—they had found another way forward, but at what cost?

"Jeane," Halie said, her voice tight with concern, "I know you think we need to press on, but this feels wrong. The air here is thick with something ancient and hungry—something that wants to consume us whole." She gestured towards Merrin's twisted form. "And look what it's already done to one of us! We don't even know what the sword does yet, let alone whether touching it will make things worse."

Jeane hesitated for a moment, her resolve wavering in the face of Halie's wisdom. The cleric was right—this whole situation reeked of ancient evil and untold horrors. But they had come too far to turn back now, hadn't they? The thought of abandoning Merrin to whatever fate awaited her alone was unthinkable.

"Fine," Jeane finally ground out, her wings settling as she came to a decision. "We'll be careful—extremely careful. But we're not leaving Merrin here to die alone in this cursed place." She turned to face the newly revealed tunnel, her crimson eyes narrowed with determination. "Varrika, you take point. Halie, keep that Protection spell active and be ready to cast again if needed. And Merrin..." Jeane's voice softened slightly as she looked down at her friend's suffering form. "...hang in there. We're going to figure this out—together."
