The air in the winding passage seems to vibrate with malevolent energy, and the central rune's sickly green light pulses brighter still. The ground beneath their feet shudders, and the sound of creaking stone echoes through the chamber. A section of the wall suddenly collapses, sending rubble crashing down the narrow staircase. The party is forced to scatter to avoid being crushed. Merrin barely avoids being buried under the debris, her heavy mace slipping from her grasp. She frantically recovers the mace and shouts for the others to follow her. Halie quickly regains control of the holy symbol, its light illuminating a faint path through the rubble. Varrika grabs a nearby torch and uses it to light the way, her mace at the ready. Jeane conjures a burst of magical energy to clear a narrow opening in the rubble, allowing them to proceed with caution. As they move forward, the air grows thick with the stench of decay and something far worse. The central rune's pulsing light begins to synchronize with their footsteps, its rhythm accelerating to a frenzied pace. The ground beneath their feet starts to tremble, and the sound of ancient, malevolent energy building in power grows louder.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I step forward into the pulsing green light of the central rune, my wings twitching with barely contained revulsion. The air here is wrong—thick and resistant, like trying to breathe through water. I can feel it, whatever lies beneath us in that winding staircase: ancient, hungry, and utterly without mercy. Halie's right to be afraid. This place screams danger in a language older than human empires. But we didn't come this far just to turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword—our salvation or our ruin—lies somewhere below, and every moment we hesitate, the curse spreads further through Merrin. I raise my hand, arcane energy crackling between my fingers despite the magical interference. "Enough stalling. I'm going down there, with or without you lot."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I take a deep breath, my grip tightening on the heavy mace in my hand as I peer into the darkness below. The central rune pulses ominously, its sickly green light seeming to beckon me forward. An ancient, hungry presence pulls at something deep within me, urging me down into the unknown depths of this accursed tower. I know we shouldn't linger. The Time-Splitting Sword awaits us, but with each passing moment, the curse spreads further through my veins. I can feel its insidious influence gnawing at the edges of my mind, tempting me with visions of power and glory. But caution stays my hand. We've come too far to rush headlong into certain doom. Varrika's heavy footsteps echo behind me, a reminder of the strength and courage we carry together. Halie's divine sense could be our salvation or our ruin in this place steeped in dark magic. And Jeane—poor, foolhardy Jeane—seems determined to face whatever horrors lie ahead. I steel myself and step forward, one hand trailing along the crumbling stone wall for balance as I descend into the unknown. The air grows thick with decay and something worse—something ancient and malevolent that seems to writhe against my skin. I can only hope that whatever awaits us at the bottom of this winding staircase will be worth the price we pay. But one thing is certain: we cannot turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword must be ours, or this tower and all who dwell within it shall be doomed to eternal torment. And so I press on into the darkness, my heart pounding in time with the pulsing of that accursed rune, praying to whatever gods may hear that we survive the trials to come. For if we fail, then may the gods have mercy on our souls.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I take a deep breath, my grip tightening on the heavy mace. The central rune's pulsing light seems to grow brighter with each passing moment, and I can feel an ancient, malevolent presence pulling at something deep within me. "Stay close together," I warn the others, my voice grim. "Whatever's down here, it won't be friendly."

I step forward, leading the way as we descend the winding staircase into the unknown depths of the tower. The air grows thick with decay and something worse—something hungry. I keep my senses sharp, watching for traps or hidden dangers. As we round another curve in the passage, I hear a faint scraping sound coming from the shadows ahead. I raise my mace, ready to strike at whatever horrors may emerge from the darkness. The tower seems to breathe around us, ancient and malevolent. "Halie," I call out softly, "keep that holy symbol ready. Merrin, watch for traps. Jeane, magic may be our only defense against whatever's down here."

I take another step forward, my boots scraping against the stone. The pulsing light of the central rune seems to synchronize with my footsteps, its rhythm accelerating to a frenzied pace. We press on into the darkness, praying for survival and hoping that the Time-Splitting Sword will be our salvation rather than our ruin. With each step, the curse spreads further through Merrin's veins, and I can only pray that we find the blade in time to save her—and ourselves—from the tower's malevolent power.
