Round 50 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin takes a step forward, the air rushes in with an unsettling intensity, threatening to extinguish her torches. She stumbles, nearly losing her footing on the slick stone floor. Halie's voice echoes through the tunnel, "Merrin, wait! The air pressure is increasing! We need to find a safe way to proceed." The hissing grows louder, echoing off the stone walls, and the central rune's sickly green light pulses brighter, as if urging Merrin forward. Suddenly, the torches on the tunnel walls flicker and dim, casting eerie shadows on the ground. The air pressure surges again, making it difficult for the party to maintain their footing. The hissing grows louder still, and the sound of grinding stone echoes from deeper within the tunnel, warning of an impending collapse. Merrin must decide whether to investigate the glowing symbols further or try to find a way to stabilize the air pressure before proceeding down the tunnel.
Varrika steps forward, her heavy boots echoing in the chamber. She grips her mace tightly, the worn metal familiar in her scarred hands. The pulsing green light makes her eyes water, but she doesn't look away. "Alright, lass," Varrika calls out to Merrin, her gravelly voice cutting through the tense air. "Ye've got the eyes of a hawk in the dark. Take point, but keep yer wits about ye."
She glances at Jeane, the sorcerer's face illuminated by flickering torchlight. "And ye," Varrika nods to Jeane, "keep that ward up. I don't trust anything in this place not to bite us if we let our guard down."
Halie fidgets nervously at Varrika's side, and the dwarf warrior places a steadying hand on her shoulder. "Steady now, lass. We've faced worse than a few glowing rocks."
Seraphine shifts uneasily, her gaze darting between the runes and the chamber entrance. "Varrika," she says, "if those runes activate something-"
"I know," Varrika cuts her off gruffly. "We'll deal with it when we have to. But right now, our best chance is to keep moving."
She takes a deep breath, tasting the thick air on her tongue. "Merrin," Varrika calls out again, "what do ye see in there?"
The dwarf warrior tenses, ready to follow or defend as needed. She knows they're pushing into dangerous unknowns, but she also knows they've come too far to turn back now. "Just remember," Varrika mutters under her breath, "whatever we find in that chamber, we leave with the sword. Nothing more, nothing less."
Her voice rumbles with grim determination as she faces the pulsing green light and whatever threats it might hide.
The air inside the stone tower grows thicker, heavier, each breath tasting of something ancient and wrong. The central rune pulses faster now, its green light washing over us in sickening waves. I can feel it tugging at something deep within me—some primal part that recognizes this magic as corrupt beyond salvation. Halie's right. This whole place is a deathtrap disguised as an opportunity. But the sword... if we don't retrieve it, who will? And if we let it fall into the wrong hands because we were too cowardly to face its curse—
I draw arcane symbols in the air, channeling what little power I have left to maintain a protective ward around us. It flickers, barely holding against the tower's malevolent energy. "Varrika," I call out, my voice steady despite the dread coiling in my gut. "Light another torch—we'll need more illumination in that tunnel."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady my nerves as I eye the pulsing green rune. The air feels heavy, charged with an ancient and malevolent energy. I can practically taste the danger on my tongue. "Alright, here goes nothing," I mutter under my breath, more to myself than anyone else. With a quick prayer to whatever gods might be listening, I take a tentative step forward, my hand hovering over the runes etched into the stone. The moment my fingers make contact, a jolt of energy courses through me, making every hair on my body stand on end. I bite back a yelp, forcing myself to maintain focus as the rune pulses even brighter, casting an eerie glow across the chamber. "Well, that's not ominous at all," I say, trying to keep my tone light despite the fear clawing at my insides. "Anyone else feeling like we've just unleashed something we shouldn't have?"
I take a step back, my eyes darting around the chamber as if expecting some fresh horror to come crawling out of the shadows. The air feels even thicker now, heavy with a sense of wrongness that sets my teeth on edge. "Right then," I say, squaring my shoulders and readying myself for whatever comes next. "Let's see what other delightful surprises this place has in store for us, shall we?"
