Narrator · Narrator

As Merrin steps further into the winding tunnel, her torches threatened by increasing air rush, she stumbles upon a particularly dense concentration of glowing symbols etched into the walls. The sickly green light from the central rune casts an eerie glow on the markings, which appear to be a warning or a message in an ancient language. The floor beneath Merrin gives another slight shudder, and a faint hissing noise echoes through the tunnel. She notices that the air pressure is building up, making her ears pop. The rope in her hand begins to fray, and the torches dance precariously close to the air venting gas. Immediate pressure: Merrin must decide whether to investigate the glowing symbols further or proceed down the tunnel, now that the air pressure has increased, before it becomes too intense.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I drop my crossbow and reach for the tinderbox. "Everyone back up. We're not going in there like this." The green light from the central rune pulses faster now—it's feeding on something, I'm certain of it—and Merrin standing at the threshold looks like she's already halfway through a portal to the afterlife. "Merrin, pull back. Varrika, help her out. We need to regroup and think this through properly." My hands shake as I strike flint—stupid tired arms—but finally a spark catches and the torch flares up. The light it casts reveals more of those sickening symbols on the walls, crawling like insects across the stone. "Jeane, what do you make of these? Anything familiar from your studies?" I need to focus, to ground myself in something real. This place feels wrong—wronger than usual—and that's saying something after the week we've had. I'm not backing down, but I'm also not leading us blindly into a magic meatgrinder. There has to be another way. A smarter way. If this is what it takes to save the world—or at least our little corner of it—I want to do it right, not just fast.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane stands at the edge of the pit, tracing arcane symbols in the air with her fingers as she consults the runes. The magic here is old—older than I've ever encountered before. These symbols... they're not just warnings or directions. They're binding contracts, and we're already violating them by being down here. The central rune pulses again, its sickly green light illuminating Jeane's pale features. Something wants out of this tower. And it doesn't care what—or who—it takes with it. We can't just blunder in there blindly expecting to grab some sword and walk away clean. She turns to face the others, her crimson eyes glinting with barely contained power. Halie's right—the pressure is building for a reason. The air isn't just thick because of the collapse—it's being pushed out by whatever's in that tunnel ahead. If we go down there unprepared, we're not just walking into a trap. We're opening ourselves to something ancient and hungry. Jeane takes a step back from the pit's edge. I'm not saying we should give up or turn back. But we need to be smart about this. Let me cast a protective ward before we descend—something to shield us from whatever that rune is feeding on. And Merrin, you stay right where you are until I'm done.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes narrow as she takes in the pulsing rune and the oppressive atmosphere. Her fingers twitch, eager to investigate further, but caution holds her back. She glances at Jeane, still tracing symbols in the air. "Careful now," Merrin warns, her voice hushed. "We don't want to tip our hand just yet."

She peers into the darkness beyond the tunnel entrance, searching for any hint of movement or danger. The hissing grows louder, echoing off the stone walls. Merrin's heart pounds in her chest, but she forces herself to stay focused. "Alright, listen up," she says, turning to face the party. "We've got a choice here. We can either keep going down this tunnel and hope for the best, or we can try to figure out what these runes are all about."

Her gaze flicks back to the glowing symbols on the wall. "I'm no expert in ancient magic, but I know trouble when I see it. And that," she nods toward the central rune, "looks like a whole heap of trouble waiting to happen."

Merrin takes a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever lies ahead. "So what's it gonna be? We press on or start poking at things we don't understand?"
