As Jeane commands the team to shield their eyes from the spreading gas, a faint hissing echoes through the chamber. The poisonous fumes seem to be intensifying, making it harder for the party to breathe. Halie's holy symbol glows softly, casting an eerie light on the darkening air. Merrin, poised at the edge of the pit, tests the rope with a practiced hand, her grip tightening as she prepares to descend. She looks up at Jeane, her eyes locked with hers, and asks, "Are we ready?" The silence is oppressive, the weight of the unknown pressing down on them like an unseen force. Suddenly, the hissing grows louder, and a faint, eerie glow begins to emanate from the central rune, casting an otherworldly light on the chamber's walls.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

The ancient stone floor trembles beneath my boots as I scan the chamber's shadows for any sign of movement. The air itself seems alive, thick with malevolent intent. My hands tighten around the haft of my mace, the weight of it reassuring against the unknown dangers that lurk in this accursed place. "Keep your eyes shielded and your wits about you," I growl to the others, my gravelly voice barely audible over the ominous groaning of the crumbling tower. "This sword's curse has tainted everything it touches."

I edge towards the pit, muscles coiled and ready to spring into action at the first hint of threat. The rope in my hands feels like it could snap at any moment, but Merrin's eagerness to test its strength is matched only by the rest of us. We've come too far to turn back now. "Stay sharp," I mutter, more to myself than anyone else. "And for the love of all that's holy, don't let your guard down for a second."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The central rune pulses again—brighter this time—and I can feel it in my teeth. Whatever curse protects this chamber, it's not sleeping anymore. "Stop," I command sharply, moving between Merrin and the pit edge. "We don't know what testing that rope does here. The runes responded when we entered—they're active defense or trigger. And now they're brightening." The air tastes wrong—like copper and decay—and my wings are itching. Halie's holy symbol glows faintly, casting weak light across concerned faces. Good. Something sacred might counterbalance whatever unholy shit we've stumbled into. I turn to the others: "This gas isn't normal. It's targeted. Someone or something wants us disoriented before we fall into that pit."

My gaze finds Merrin—so eager to proceed, so ready with that crossbow aimed at nothing yet. I need her sharp eyes and steady hands, yes. But not if she falls victim first to some ancient trap. "We're not descending until we understand what's down there," I declare, voice firm despite the dread coiling in my gut. "Merrin, hold your position. Varrika, keep scanning those shadows—something stirred when we entered."

The central rune pulses a third time, green light spilling across crumbling stone like liquid poison. I raise one hand, dark energy already gathering at my fingertips: ready to shield or strike, depending on what emerges from the darkness below. "Everyone," I say, meeting each gaze in turn, "stay alert. This tower has been waiting. And now it knows we're here."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I squint through the hazy air at Jeane, my brows furrowed in concern. "Gas is getting thicker," I mutter, reaching for a waterskin. I take a quick swig, hoping to clear my throat of the acrid taste. "Aye, something's stirring down there alright."

My hands twitch, eager to test that rope and find out what lurks in the pit's depths. But Jeane's right, we can't rush this. One wrong move could spell disaster for us all. I turn to Varrika, keeping my voice low. "Keep those sharp eyes of yours peeled. Anything moves, we need to know about it pronto." She gives a curt nod, mace at the ready. My gaze drifts back to the pulsing rune, its sickly glow seeming to intensify with each passing moment. It's like it's calling to something deep inside me, whispering promises of power and glory. I shake my head, banishing the thought. Can't let the tower's tricks get under my skin. "Alright," I say, turning back to the group. "Let's do this smart. Merrin goes down first, scope things out. Then we send Halie with her holy light to keep any nasties at bay. Varikka and Jeane hold the line up top." I pause, meeting each of their eyes in turn. "Any questions or are we all on the same page?"

My hand rests on the rope, ready to start our descent into the unknown. But first, I need to know everyone's got my back. This is our last stand, and we can't afford any surprises.
