Merrin carefully edges closer to the pit, her eyes scanning the runes for any hidden mechanisms or traps. Her hands move swiftly, testing each rune with a deft touch. The moment her fingers make contact with the first rune, the air around her seems to writhe in agony, as if the very fabric of reality is protesting her intrusion. A sickly green glow surges through the runes, casting an eerie light on Merrin's face. She winces, her eyes watering from the intense energy. The sound of screeching metal echoes through the chamber, followed by a deafening crash – the floor beneath them gives way, sending the party tumbling into the pit. The party finds themselves in a narrow, winding tunnel, with no visible exit. A faint whispering echoes through the passageway, growing louder with each passing moment. The air is thick with noxious fumes, making it difficult to breathe. A figure materializes at the far end of the tunnel, its features obscured by shadows. The whispering grows clearer, and the party can make out words: "Welcome... to your grave..."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch as Merrin tests the rope, her movements precise and deliberate despite the ominous atmosphere that hangs heavy in the air. The central rune pulses with an otherworldly light, casting flickering shadows across the chamber walls. A shiver runs down my spine as I feel its pull, a dark and ancient hunger that seems to reach out for us all.
"The air itself feels charged,"
I murmur, my voice so low it is nearly lost in the sudden screech of the runes. The ground beneath our feet trembles, a deep rumble that resonates through my bones. "This place... it's not just wrong, it's alive with malevolence."
My eyes dart to the new passageway revealed by the collapsed floor, where faint whispers seem to echo from the depths. I take an involuntary step back, my hand instinctively moving to the heavy tome strapped to my belt—my last resort in this place of forbidden power.
I turn to face the others, my expression one of grim determination mixed with a deep-seated fear. "We must be cautious now more than ever. Whatever lies ahead, it is clear that the curse of this tower runs deeper than any of us imagined." My gaze settles on Merrin, who looks up from the pit's edge, her face etched with concern and resolve.*
"The runes have awakened, and they seem... hungry for something. Perhaps we should re-evaluate our approach before venturing further into this unknown."

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

The central rune pulsed brighter with our entry, its sickly green light filling the chamber and making my eyes water. I could feel it—something ancient and hungry, reaching out through the stone itself. The air inside this cursed tower had changed; it felt alive now, thick with malevolent intent. "Stop," I said sharply to Merrin as she tested the rope near the edge of the pit. "The runes are responding to her movements." My wings fluttered instinctively, wanting to take flight and escape this oppressive atmosphere. But we had come too far to turn back now. The Time-Splitting Sword was close—I could feel it pulling at me like a lodestone. Halie's voice trembled as she clutched her holy symbol. "Jeane, something's wrong here. This place feels... unnatural." She was right, of course. But we didn't have time for her doubts now. The gas from below was spreading across the floor, carrying with it a sweet, cloying scent that made my head swim. "Everyone shield your eyes!" I commanded as the runes flared again, brighter than before. Even through closed lids, the light burned white-hot against my skin. When it faded, I opened them slowly to see Merrin standing at the edge of the pit, her expression grim but determined. "We need to move," she said. "The fumes are getting worse."

I nodded and drew a deep breath, steeling myself against the ancient hunger gnawing at my insides. "Agreed. But carefully."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

I glance nervously at the swirling noxious fumes rising from the pit, my stomach churning at the thought of descending into that unknown abyss. The rope feels heavy in my hands, a physical reminder of the danger we're about to face. "Alright, here goes," I mutter under my breath, bracing myself as I give the rope a firm tug. The fibers bite into my palm, and I wince at the sting, but there's no giving way. At least the rope seems sound enough to hold our weight. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come. We've made it this far, fought our way through traps and dark magic alike. This pit may be our final obstacle, but I refuse to let fear stop us now. "Everyone ready?" I ask, my voice tight with tension. "We're going in."
