The pulsing runes on the floor intensify, their light casting eerie shadows on the walls. The air thickens, heavy with an otherworldly presence that makes Halie's holy symbol glow more brightly. Merrin readies her trap alarm system, carefully wiring the rope and crossbow to detect any changes in the chamber's energy. Jeane observes her companions, her eyes darting between Halie and Merrin as she senses the weight of their caution. The ground beneath the beam creaks ominously, and the sound echoes through the chamber. The runes on the floor pulse in sync with the creaks, as if warning of an impending event. The air seems to vibrate with the force of the runes, and Varrika's eyes widen in alarm.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I stand at the edge of the pit, my eyes fixed on the swirling vortex below as the air crackles with ancient power. The runes on the floor pulse in time with my racing heart, their dark energy coiling around us all like a noose. Halie's warning about 'wrong magic' echoes in my mind, but so does the desperate need to complete our quest.
My gaze sweeps across the chamber, taking in Merrin's grim determination as she sets up the trap alarm system, Jeane's wide-eyed fear as she watches the vortex spin, and Varrika's stoic calm. We are all on edge, teetering on the precipice of something far more dangerous than mere physical danger. It is a test of wills, of knowledge, and of the bonds between us.
I take a slow breath, steeling myself for what I am about to propose. It goes against every instinct for self-preservation, but it may be our only way forward. "Wait," I call out, my voice cutting through the air. All eyes turn to me. I hold up a hand, silencing any questions before they can be asked.
My mind races, sifting through the fragmentary information we have gleaned about this place and the sword it guards. The curse is no mere legend; it lives in these walls, in the very air we breathe. And if it has already begun to affect Merrin... "The sword," I begin, my tone measured and precise, "it isn't just a relic. It's a conduit for this place's power. To retrieve it, we must first understand how to control that power."
I point at the runes on the floor, their patterns now seeming to shift before my eyes. "Those aren't just warnings. They're instructions. And they're speaking to something... or someone... within us." My gaze falls on Merrin, then Halie. "The demonic energy here is different from what we've encountered before. It's feeding off our own magic, our own belief systems. We need to find out what it wants before we can even think about leaving with the sword."
I turn back to the pit, my voice dropping to a near whisper. "Whoever goes down there next... they will be the key to this lock. But they must be willing to embrace the curse, to become its vessel for a moment. It's the only way we'll survive this." The words hang in the air, a chilling proposition in a room already thick with dread.*

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle the edge of the pit carefully, my dark wings half-spread for balance as I study the pulsing runes below us. The air here is thick with residual magic—old death magic, from the smell of it—and the stones themselves seem to hum with barely contained energy. Merrin's right about not fiddling with this directly. Those runes are active defense systems, and the curse on that sword... I can feel it even from up here, like cold fingers tracing patterns across my skin. It wants us down there. Wants a new host to claim. But we came for that sword. And leaving empty-handed after coming this far would be worse than facing whatever traps await. We need to proceed with extreme caution. Halie's holy symbol might help dampen the magical backlash, but we can't rely on it completely—the curse seems specifically attuned to arcane energy. What we need is a way down that minimizes our exposure and allows us to react quickly if something goes wrong. I glance at the rope between us, then up at the newly opened passageway with its unknown occupants. The timing of that opening feels... deliberate. Like whoever—or whatever—is in there knows we're here now. We can't stay on this ledge forever, either. Those runes are pulsing brighter with every moment, and I don't trust that stone to support us indefinitely. We need to make a decision, and quickly. I turn back to Merrin and Halie, my expression serious despite the casual grace of my demonic features. I propose this: Merrin descends first, using her rogue skills to test for physical traps on the rune circle itself. If she signals clear, then Halie follows with her symbol ready—if something reacts badly to holy energy, we'll know it's specifically targeting faith magic and can adjust our approach. I remain here as backup, ready to cast support spells or provide cover fire if needed. My wings give me mobility that neither of you has—the second I see anything amiss, I'm in position to intervene. Seraphine can maintain a wide-area detection spell from up here, alerting us to any magical changes we might miss. It's risky. Everything about this situation is risky. But hesitation will only make things worse. The longer we stay on this ledge, the more likely those occupants in the new passageway decide to investigate. And I'd much rather face whatever's down there on our terms than as reactive prey. So what do you say? Shall we put Merrin's exceptional skill to use and see if we can thread this cursed needle?

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I stand closer to Merrin, my heavy mace held loosely at my side. The air feels thick here, wrong somehow—faith and magic curdling like old milk. Those runes on the floor aren't just symbols; they pulse with something dark that makes my skin crawl.
