Phase: converging · forced · organic escalating

The secret chamber's air grew heavier, each breath tasting of ancient dust and something else—something wrong. The central pit yawned darkly, its edges lined with runes that pulsed like a diseased heart. Jeane circled it warily, her wings half-spread for balance, the leathery appendages a stark contrast against the stone walls slick with condensation. Every instinct screamed at her to leave this place, but the Time-Splitting Sword lay below.
Merrin stood at the edge, a rope secured around her waist—ready to descend into the darkness despite the obvious dangers. Her halfling quickness and alert eyes made her an excellent scout, but Jeane worried about her recklessness when faced with magic she didn't understand. The rogue's fingers twitched towards her crossbow, a habit born of countless near-misses in more forgiving environments.
Halie moved closer to the pit's edge, her heavy mace held ready though she kept it back, unwilling to strike blindly into whatever lay below. The cleric's blue-grey eyes scanned the chamber with a focus that spoke of divine training and natural caution—traits Jeane both admired and found frustrating in this moment. They needed Merrin's skill, but Halie's wariness was grounded in hard-earned wisdom.
The runes pulsed again, their red light intensifying for a heartbeat before subsiding. The air crackled with energy that felt wrong on a fundamental level—magic twisted beyond recognition into something malevolent and hungry. Jeane could feel it lapping at the edges of her mind like cold fingers testing a lock. "Those runes are active," she said finally, breaking the tense silence. "The magic here is... ancient death magic. Centuries old. And I don't think whatever died down there stayed dead."
