Phase: escalating

The air inside the crumbling tower grew thick enough to choke on, heavy with a pungent, acidic scent that made Halie's eyes water. The beam creaked louder, and the ground shuddered beneath Varrika's feet, threatening to send her tumbling into the pit. The swirling rune pulsed brighter, casting an eerie glow over the chamber. Suddenly, a section of the wall slid open, revealing a narrow passageway that appeared to lead deeper into the tower. The passageway was lined with ancient carvings depicting a figure surrounded by symbols of binding and imprisonment.
Jeane circled the pit's edge, her wings tight against her back, eyes scanning every carved surface for traps or symbols she recognized. The central rune pulsed again, its red light casting stark shadows across Seraphine's face as she stared into the darkness below. "The air inside this cursed tower grows thick enough to choke on," Jeane muttered, more to herself than anyone else. "Ancient death magic courses through the stone veins—I can taste it rotten sweet—and now Merrin is down there fiddling with that damn rune while Varrika strains above like a piano wire about to snap and Halie's standing around looking terrified which doesn't help anyone at all."
Seraphine stood at the precipice's edge, her eyes fixed on the swirling rune below as Merrin descended into the abyss of the tower's central chamber. The air grew thick with an ancient, malevolent energy that chilled her to the bone, yet she couldn't look away from the hypnotic patterns carved into the stone floor. Each pulse of the runes seemed to echo a warning deep within her mind—a warning of power and danger in equal measure.
Varrika braced herself against the beam, muscles burning as she strained to hold Merrin's weight. The rope dug into her calloused palms, but she gritted her teeth and bore it. "Halie! Get ready to pull them up!" she called out, her voice echoing through the crumbling chamber. Her eyes darted across the pit, scanning for any sign of danger. The air grew colder by degrees, each degree feeling like it might freeze her resolve.
Halie inched closer to the pit's edge with heavy Mace in hand, watching Merrin descend into that cursed chamber below while Varrika strained against the beam above. Every creak of wood and groan of stone echoed through her like a prayer backwards. She raised her silver holy symbol, letting its faint light pool at the precipice edge. The runes on the floor pulsed with an ancient malevolence that made her skin crawl even further.
The central rune pulsed again, its red light intensifying as Merrin drew closer. The tower seemed to hold its breath around them, the very stones humming with anticipation or warning—it was hard to tell which. Jeane continued her careful circuit of the pit's edge, while Seraphine stood frozen at the precipice, her eyes locked on the swirling patterns below. Varrika strained against the rope, muscles screaming in protest, and Halie watched from above with a mixture of fear and determination.
The air grew colder still, thick with ancient magic that tasted like rust and decay. Something shifted deep within the tower's core—a rumble that seemed to come from everywhere at once—and then silence fell, heavy and expectant. The runes pulsed again, brighter this time, and a low moan echoed up from the darkness below.
