The air inside the crumbling stone tower grew heavy and cold as the central rune pulsed with increasing urgency, its red light strobing across the chamber walls like a frantic heartbeat. Merrin descended into the pit below, her rope groaning under the strain as it caught on something metallic far beneath them. The skeleton's hollow eye sockets seemed to track Jeane's movements, its jaw working soundlessly in a silent gnashing of teeth.

Jeane spoke up, her voice tight with barely contained anxiety. "I can feel it, can't you? The tower itself is breathing around us—inhaling ancient death magic through those carved channels and exhaling it into this chamber like a sick lung." She turned to Merrin, still descending carefully below them. "Those runes aren't resisting; they're awakening something that was meant to stay buried with the architect who designed them. Your presence down there is an invitation for whatever's waiting below to pick them off one by one."

Seraphine nodded slowly in agreement, her sharp eyes fixed on the pulsing rune. "The air here is thick, almost alive with ancient power, and it presses against my skin like a su... "

A low, mournful wail pierced the air, sending shivers down the spines of the party members. The sound grew louder, echoing off the stone walls as if a thousand lost souls cried out in unison. The ground beneath their feet began to shift and tremble, and the chamber's walls started to shudder. Dust rained down from above, and the sound of falling debris echoed up from the pit.

"Merrin!" Varrika's voice cut through the haze of dust and fear. "Get yer arse outta there before this whole place comes down on our heads!"

Merrin felt her stomach lurch as the beam supporting her rope groaned in protest. The ground shuddered beneath her feet, and she had to dig her fingers into the crumbling stone to keep from losing her balance. With a silent prayer to any gods who might be listening, she started hauling herself back up the rope, hand over hand, as fast as her tired muscles would allow.

The beam above her creaked ominously, and Merrin could feel the ancient magic of this accursed place thrumming through the very air. Whatever force bound the Time-Splitting Sword to this tower had sensed its impending removal, and it would not relinquish its prize without a fight.

"Hurry, Merrin!" Varrika called down into the pit, her voice strained with effort and concern. "The whole damn place is coming down!"

Jeane eyes the central rune pulsing ominously. The tower groans around them, ancient stone shifting under immense stress. This whole place wants us dead—or worse, bound like that sword below. She speaks calmly, voice carrying authority: "Merrin descends too slow. Varrika, brace yourself on the rop—"
