As Seraphine takes a cautious step forward, the runes on the far wall begin to glow with an eerie, blue-green light. The chamber's instability intensifies, causing the noxious mist to swirl more rapidly. Suddenly, a section of the stone floor gives way, revealing a narrow, winding staircase leading down into darkness. The sound of scurrying rodents echoes from below. The group exchanges uneasy glances as Merrin addresses them, "We can't stay here. We need to move forward before the chamber collapses." Halie readies her holy symbol, while Varrika readies her crossbow, prepared for any unexpected dangers that may lie ahead. Jeane eyes the runes, searching for a clue to unlock the secrets of the Time-Splitting Sword. The staircase beckons, shrouded in the swirling mist. Do they descend into the unknown, or do they search for an alternative solution?

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I circle the central rune warily, my wings tucked close in this confined space. The air here is wrong—saturated with old death magic so thick it feels like I'm breathing poisoned silk. These markings... I recognize the style from forbidden texts back at the university, though thankfully never having had to study them firsthand. This isn't merely a magical trap; it's an ancient containment ward, likely holding something far worse than whatever animated those skeletons upstairs. Touching that sword directly? That's a death wish wrapped in a curse. The very thought makes my skin crawl beneath the runes tattooed there. We need to be clever here—not brave. The floor shifts again underfoot as I finish my circuit. Merrin, keep your mace ready—anything could spring from this darkness now that we've disturbed the ward's perimeter. Varrika, Halie, Seraphine—I want ideas. Preferably involving no direct contact with whatever cursed bauble sits beyond those markings. We came here for a reason: to retrieve it without keeping it ourselves. Let's not forget that crucial 'without' part. The central rune pulses again as I speak, casting grotesque shadows on the walls. It seems to feed on our presence, growing brighter with each heartbeat. Whatever lies below us... I can feel it stirring now that we've entered its domain. This tower is a tomb and we're poking at the corpse.

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's eyes dart around the chamber, taking in every shadow and crevice. The oppressive atmosphere presses down on her like a physical weight. She takes a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves. "Alright, listen up," Merrin says, her voice hushed but commanding. "We've got a problem. That sword... it's not just cursed, it's dangerous. I don't know what'll happen if we touch it directly."

She looks to each of her companions in turn, gauging their reactions. "Halie, keep that holy symbol at the ready. We might need it. Varrika, I know you're eager to charge in there, but we need to be smart about this. And Seraphine... if anyone can figure out a way to grab that thing without setting off any traps or curses, it's you."

Merrin's gaze lingers on the Time-Splitting Sword, an uneasy feeling twisting her gut. "I've got a bad feeling about this whole place. We need to be careful, or we might just end up as skeletons ourselves." She forces a shaky laugh, trying to lighten the mood even as fear gnaws at her insides. "Okay, so here's what we're gonna do..."

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I step closer to the central rune, my eyes narrowing as I study its intricate patterns. The air here is heavy, thick with an ancient power that prickles against my skin like static before a storm. My heart beats a little faster as I recognize similarities to forbidden texts I've pored over late into countless nights, works whispered about by scholars who knew too much.
"This is a warning," I murmur, more to myself than to the others. "A clear one. We need to be far cleverer than we thought if we are to succeed here without consequences."
My gaze flicks up from the rune to the ominous shape of the Time-Splitting Sword, its blade catching what little light filters into this accursed chamber. It feels wrong, even at this distance. A deep, gnawing wrongness that speaks of a power so great it can rend time itself asunder.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I crouch at the edge of the pit, heart pounding. Merrin? My voice echoes off the stone walls. I can barely make out her shape in the darkness below. The air grows colder still, and something about those markings on the wall... they crawl when you look away. We need light down there—something that doesn't depend on unstable magic. I reach for my tinderbox and a fresh torch, hands shaking just enough to betray my fear. This whole place feels wrong.
