The tension in The base of a crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. tightens for a beat as the interruption refuses to go away. Everyone is forced to stay quiet and choose their next move carefully.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

I study the rune-etched gate with a critical eye, my wings folding close against the evening chill that seems to emanate from the stone itself. The symbols here are old—predating even the common tongue—and I recognize them as wards meant to keep something in rather than out. These skeletons we've heard of? They're not mindless bone puppets. Someone's controlling them, feeding them purpose. My hand moves to the heavy mace at my hip instinctively, though I don't draw it yet. The weight is familiar, comforting. But it won't help against whatever sorcery holds this place together. We need to be smart about this. Merrin, can you see anything beyond those runes? Some weakness we can exploit? I turn to Seraphine next, my voice lowering. Keep that holy symbol close. If the legends are true and there's demonic presence here, faith might be our shield as much as any steel. We move together once Halie gets that gate open—quick and quiet. No heroics. The sword, then out. I glance at Varrika last, a smirk tugging at my lips despite the gravity of our task. Unless you have a better idea for getting past undead guards? I'm all ears if your particular talents can pick these locks faster than Halie's tools.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

Halie moves close to Jeane, looking at the runes with her. "We can't trust this magic," she says quietly. "It's old and likely still powerful." She reaches into her pack for a small tinderbox and a cloth-wrapped bundle of torches. "I'll keep light ready if we need it, but let's try to avoid using too much." Her eyes scan the tower entrance, then the surrounding woods. "Something feels off about this whole place. We should stay together."

Merrin

Merrin · Rogue

Merrin's keen eyes dart along the intricate runes etched into the ancient gate, searching for any hint of a weakness or secret latch. She moves closer, her nose nearly brushing the stone, inhaling the musty scent of history. "Well, it looks like whoever sealed this tower up knew their warding magic," she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. "Those runes are older than my grandma's dentures."

She steps back, hands on her hips, and surveys the rest of the party with a wry smile. "But you know what they say about old magic - sometimes it's just waiting for a clever halfling to come along and give it a gentle nudge."

Merrin's fingers twitch, itching to grab her lockpicks and get to work. But something in the air gives her pause. A prickling at the back of her neck, like unseen eyes watching from the shadows. She shakes her head, trying to banish the thought. "Alright, you lot. Keep your wits about you while I take a closer look at that lock. Wouldn't want any of us ending up as dinner for the tower's previous tenants."

With that, she moves closer to the gate once more, her quick hands already reaching for her tools. The runes seem to shimmer in the torchlight, as if daring her to try and outsmart them. But Merrin just chuckles under her breath, a sound like dry leaves rustling. "Oh, you've got no idea who you're dealing with, my dear gates. No idea at all."

Her fingers dance over the lock, probing for hidden mechanisms, as she begins the delicate task of picking the ancient wards that seal the tower's secrets within.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I approach the tower’s entrance, my keen elven eyes tracing the intricate runes etched into the ancient stone of the gate. The air here is thick with a sense of history, a weight that presses down upon us all.
My fingers brush against the cold metal of a torch as I turn to face the party. My expression is one of careful consideration, not fear, but a deep-seated wariness born of years spent studying the darker aspects of magical lore.
"It would be unwise to attempt brute force," I say, my voice a low murmur that carries easily in the stillness of the clearing. "These wards are no mere decoration. They pulse with an energy far older than any of us here."
I gesture towards the runes, my movements precise and deliberate.
"The magic is old and likely still powerful. We should proceed with extreme caution."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I tighten my grip on the mace's worn haft, its weight reassuring in my calloused hand. The tower looms before us, a relic of a bygone era, its stones slick with moss and decay. A chill wind whips through the clearing, carrying with it the faint scent of rot and ancient magic. My eyes narrow as I take in the runes etched into the gate. They're like nothing I've seen before, symbols of power and prohibition, their very presence a warning. I've faced undead in my time, but something about this place feels different. More dangerous. I step forward, placing myself between the gate and my companions. "Hold," I growl, my voice a low rumble. "We don't know what we're walking into here." I turn to Jeane, the sorcerer, her eyes already fixed on the wards before us. "What do you make of those runes?"

My gaze darts to Merrin, the rogue, crouched at the lock, and then to Halie, the cleric, her hand resting on the holy symbol at her breast. I can feel the tension in the air, the weight of centuries bearing down upon us. But there's no time for hesitation. We've come too far, faced too much, to turn back now. I take a deep breath, the musty air filling my lungs, and nod to Jeane. "If anyone can figure out how to get us through that gate, it's you."

I glance at Seraphine, the wizard, her eyes distant as she studies the runes. "Any ideas?" I ask, my voice gruff but not unkind. We need all the help we can get if we're going to make it out of this alive. The shadows lengthen around us, and I can feel the tower's malevolent gaze upon our small band. But I won't let fear rule me. Not now, not ever. I am Varrika Thornwake, and I will see this through to the end, whatever fate may have in store. I stand my ground, ready to face whatever lies beyond that ancient gate. The sword awaits us, and with it, the promise of great power...and perhaps, our own destruction. But there's no turning back now. We forged ahead into the unknown.
