Round 89 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane and Merrin press the Guardian for answers, its gaze flicks between them before settling on Seraphine. The ancient being's voice drips with a mixture of curiosity and warning: "The power within your friend is indeed ancient, but it is also unpredictable. If not controlled, it could unravel the very fabric of this chasm."
The air around Seraphine begins to ripple, as if reality itself is responding to her presence. The Guardian continues, "To navigate the trial, you must first understand the nature of this power. I will reveal a vision of the maze of mirrors, but be warned: what you see may not be what you expect."
The cavern falls silent, and the only sound is the soft hum of Seraphine's glowing hands. The Guardian raises its hand, and a shimmering portal materializes before them. The portal pulses with an ethereal energy, beckoning them toward the trial ahead.
Jeane hovers at the edge of the chasm, her crimson eyes fixed on the shimmering portal before them. A vision? How delightfully vague and probably misleading. The sorceress turns to Seraphine, a look of concern tempered by suspicion etched across her features. I must admit, my dear friend—when you decided to show up with an ancient artifact and a dubious backstory, I didn't expect you'd be carrying quite this much... She gestures vaguely at the glowing aura surrounding Seraphine. ...baggage. Her gaze shifts back to the Guardian, and her voice takes on a dangerous edge. You speak of control, but from where I'm standing, it looks like whatever is awakening inside my companion might very well be beyond even her considerable talents. So tell me—if this power proves too much for her to handle, what then? Will our friends' lives be forfeit simply because we dared to investigate an ancient prison? Jeane's wings beat slowly, maintaining her position just above the chasm edge. Or perhaps you have a more... permanent solution in mind? Some convenient way to contain or silence those who've seen too much? Because I assure you, Guardian, if this trial proves to be nothing more than an elaborate means of culling adventurers, then you'll find me to be far less cooperative than you might hope. Despite her harsh words, Jeane's expression softens slightly as she looks back at Seraphine. But regardless of the risks, we can't simply leave Halie and our other companions trapped down there. So here's what I propose—we enter this vision of yours, learn what we can about this power within Seraphine, and formulate a plan before attempting the trial proper. She turns back to the Guardian, her voice firm. But know this—I won't be dancing to your tune without understanding every single step. If you expect us to trust you blindly, then you're sorely mistaken. We'll proceed with eyes wide open, and if this proves to be a trap— Jeane's hand moves to the hilt of her mace. —then I promise you, we won't go quietly. To Merrin, she adds, Stay close, little one. Between whatever ancient magic is stirring within our ranks and the ever-present threat of this accursed chasm, we'll need to watch each other's backs more closely than ever before.
I feel a chill trace its way down my spine as Jeane’s words hang in the air, her threat against the Guardian a stark reminder of the precarious position we find ourselves in. My hands still glow with an otherworldly light, the energy within me humming like a taut bowstring ready to release at any moment. The Guardian's promise of a vision feels less like a gift and more like a trap now, but what choice do we have? Halie, Varrika, and Merrin are waiting for us, their lives potentially hanging by the thinnest thread in this accursed chasm.
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for whatever lies ahead. "Jeane is right," I say, my voice steady despite the tremor running through me. "We need to know what we're facing before we can hope to save our friends." My gaze falls on the shimmering portal, its ethereal energy calling out to something deep within me. It feels like a siren song, both alluring and terrifying at once. "But if this power truly is beyond my control, then perhaps... perhaps it's better for one of us to go through first." I look at Jeane, then at Merrin, my expression softening slightly. "Someone who can observe without being directly affected by whatever tests the maze presents. That way, we can understand the nature of this power and prepare accordingly before subjecting ourselves—or our friends—to its full force."
The idea is a risk, I know that. It could be just as dangerous for whomever goes through first. But it also seems like the only logical course of action. We need information, and if one of us can gather that without putting all of us at risk, then it’s worth the chance.
I step closer to the portal, my hand reaching out instinctively before I catch myself. "Whoever goes, they must be prepared for anything. The Guardian said it was a test of courage and wits, but also... I hesitate, my eyes locking onto Jeane’s. "Also, it seems to have something to do with the reflection of one's own soul. Whatever we see in those mirrors, I fear it might not be entirely our own."
