Round 84 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Seraphine struggles to sit up, her eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of Merrin. She spots a faint flicker of light in the distance and makes her way towards it, the heavy metal bar clattering against the rubble as she moves. As she approaches the source of the light, she sees that it's a small torch, partially buried in the debris. She grabs the torch and holds it up, illuminating the dark space around her. The air is thick with dust and the smell of decay, but she can see that they're in a large cavern, with a series of stone pillars supporting the ceiling. A faint noise echoes through the cavern, making her freeze, and she whispers to herself, "What's down here?"
I descend into the darkness, my wings beating steadily as I hover just above the rubble-strewn floor of the cavern. The torchlight flickers and dances across ancient stonework covered in strange symbols—glyphs of binding and containment, perhaps? Or warnings meant for those foolish enough to come this far. Stay back, I call out to Seraphine and Merrin. I need a moment to scan for threats before we move together. My crimson eyes narrow as they adjust to the gloom, searching every shadow, every alcove, every recess where something ancient might lurk.
The air grows colder still, and that fetid scent becomes almost overwhelming—decay mixed with something old and malevolent. I don't like this place, I mutter, more to myself than anyone else as I hover there, suspended between the world above and whatever lies beneath. The magic here... it feels wrong. Corrupted. Like the very stone is tainted. I begin to circle slowly, my mace at the ready, scanning for any sign of movement or threat. If Halie summoned something down here, we need to know what it is—and fast. Whatever's keeping her trapped... I suspect it won't be pleased to find new visitors. My eyes fix on a particularly dark corner where shadows seem to cling thicker than elsewhere.
There, I point with my free hand. Something moves in that shadow. Or maybe it's just the light playing tricks? No—watch how the darkness itself seems to... pulse. That's not natural. Stay alert. Suddenly, the air around us shimmers—and a figure materializes from the shadows. It's tall and gaunt, with pale grey skin stretched taut over bone, and eyes that seem to glow with an inner fire. What are you doing here? The voice is dry as dust, ancient beyond imagining.
I am Jeane—we've come for our companions who fell here by accident, I reply, keeping my tone level despite the fear that coils cold in my gut. We mean no disrespect to this place or its... guardian.
I feel my heart hammering against my ribs as Jeane descends into the cavern, her wings beating steadily against the sudden gusts of cold air. The torchlight flickers and dances across ancient stonework covered in strange symbols—glyphs of binding and containment, perhaps? Or warnings meant for those foolish enough to come this far.
Seraphine takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what’s to come. She knows their only choice is to descend into that terrifying unknown. Halie and Varrika are potentially trapped below, and the thought of leaving them to whatever fate awaits in this place is unthinkable. She grips her heavy metal bar tighter, the cold weight a small comfort in the face of such overwhelming danger.
I'm ready, she says, her voice steadier than she feels. Whatever we find down there, we face it together. But... be prepared for anything. That corruption I felt? It was old. Ancient. And it didn't seem pleased to see us. She looks around at the crumbling stones and the dark shadows of the chasm, a shiver running down her spine. Every instinct is screaming at her to turn back, to find another way. But they have no other way. The path forward leads only one direction now: straight down, into the heart of the unknown.
As Jeane begins to move towards the crumbling bridge, Seraphine follows close behind Merrin, her eyes darting from side to side, searching for any sign of movement or threat. The air grows colder as they descend, and a strange, fetid scent begins to waft up from below—a combination of decay, ancient magic, and something else... something almost organic and alive.
She whispers a silent prayer to her god, begging for protection against the darkness they are about to encounter. Her mind races with possible spells, defensive wards, and counter-curses she might need to employ. This is what she trained for, after all—a wizard's greatest challenge: facing the unknown, the forbidden, the terrifying power of the arcane.
But as they reach the bridge and begin to cross it, the groaning intensifies, and Seraphine can feel the stones shifting slightly beneath her feet. A wave of dizziness washes over her, and she stumbles, nearly losing her balance. She catches herself on the wall, her heart pounding in her chest.
What is happening? she thinks frantically. Is this the bridge collapsing already? Or something worse? She looks back up at Jeane and Merrin, her eyes wide with fear. This descent has barely begun, and already it feels like they are being pulled into a waking nightmare.
As they reach the bottom of the chasm, Seraphine's gaze falls upon a tall, gaunt figure materializing from the shadows. It’s tall and gaunt, with pale grey skin stretched taut over bone, and eyes that seem to glow with an inner fire.
The creature speaks, its voice dry as dust, ancient beyond imagining: What are you doing here? Seraphine takes a step back instinctively, her grip tightening on the heavy metal bar. She can feel the ancient power radiating from this being, a presence so overwhelming it makes her skin crawl with dread.
I am Seraphine—we've come for our companions who fell here by accident, she replies, trying to keep her tone level despite the fear that coils cold in her gut. We mean no disrespect to this place or its... guardian. She glances at Jeane, then back to the creature, her mind racing. This being clearly wields great power—perhaps the same magic that trapped Halie? She needs to tread carefully here, to find out what it knows without provoking its wrath.
Her eyes dart around the cavern, taking in the strange symbols etched into every surface. They seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, and she feels an overwhelming urge to flee. But she knows they can't—they have to find Halie and Varrika first, no matter what dangers await them here.
The air grows colder still as she stands there, waiting for the creature's response. She can hear her own breath echoing in the vast space, a stark reminder of just how alone and vulnerable they truly are.*
