Round 62 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine ventures into the dark tunnel, her eyes adjust slowly to the dim light. She takes a deep breath, her hand on the hilt of her dagger, and begins to follow the scrying markers Jeane provided. The air is thick with the scent of decay and magic, and she can feel the weight of the tower's ancient history bearing down upon her. As she rounds a corner, she hears the sound of dripping water echoing off the walls. Suddenly, a faint glow catches her eye - a soft blue light emanating from a small chamber to her left. Seraphine slows her pace, her heart beating slightly faster with anticipation. She approaches the door cautiously, listening for any sign of movement within. The sound of dripping water grows louder, and she realizes that the light is coming from a small pool of water in the center of the room. As she peeks inside, she sees a figure slumped against the far wall - Varrika, her eyes vacant and unresponsive. The ancient Prison Guardian's gaze seems to be fixed on Varrika, its malevolent intent radiating towards her like a palpable force.
Jeane watches the scrying map intently as Seraphine's marker moves deeper into the tower. The lines of magical energy pulse with every step she takes, tracing her path towards Varrika's location. Her crimson eyes narrow as she notices something else moving—multiple somethings, actually, converging on different parts of the chamber from various directions. "Not good," Jeane mutters to herself, running a hand through her long white hair in frustration. She gestures sharply and another layer of the scrying map unfolds, showing more detailed readings. The ancient prison guardian's energy signature is massive and malevolent, its intent towards Varrika clear and terrifying. "That thing isn't just wandering—it's hunting," Jeane says aloud to no one in particular. "And now Merrin and Seraphine are walking right into its path." She taps the map where three signatures converge—a potential intersection point between Seraphine, Merrin, and whatever else is stirring in the depths.
Jeane's wings shift uneasily as she weighs her options. Teleporting down would let her intervene directly, but it would also put them all in the same fight together. "Too risky," she decides after a moment's hesitation. "If that guardian gets them both and I join... we're all trapped down there." Her hand hovers over a different rune on the scrying table—one that would allow her to project her voice and presence without physically joining them.
"Fine," Jeane says with a frustrated sigh, activating the communication rune. "Seraphine, Merrin—I'm linking you in. Listen carefully—the guardian isn't alone. There are at least three other signatures moving towards your positions from different directions." Her voice echoes through their minds clearly, carrying an edge of barely-controlled panic. "Whatever you're doing, do it faster. The whole tower seems to be waking up down there."
Jeane's eyes flick between the multiple threats on her scrying map as she continues, "And Seraphine—when you find Varrika, don't engage that guardian directly. It wants her specifically for some reason, and we don't know why yet." She taps another rune, overlaying a series of ward symbols onto their current locations. "I'm boosting your protective wards from up here, but they won't hold forever against something that old."
Jeane's wings tighten around herself as she watches the markers continue to move. "We're all walking into a trap down there," she says more to herself than to them. "Question is whether we spring it on our terms or let it catch us unprepared."
Seraphine's heart hammers in her chest as Jeane's warning echoes through her mind, her words painting a picture of impending danger. The scrying markers pulse with renewed urgency, guiding her steps with a newfound sense of purpose. "Three other signatures?" she mutters under her breath, her voice a faint murmur in the oppressive silence of the tunnel. "What fresh hell is this?"
She quickens her pace, her boots scraping softly against the ancient stone floor. The sound of dripping water grows louder as she approaches the chamber Jeane indicated, and she can see the faint blue glow spilling out from under the doorframe. Seraphine's hand tightens on her staff, the cool wood a comfort against her palm.
With a deep breath to steady herself, she pushes open the heavy wooden door, revealing a small, circular room. The pool of water in its center reflects the eerie blue light, casting dancing shadows on the walls. And there, slumped against the far wall, is Varrika. Her eyes are closed, her body unmoving.
Seraphine's gaze darts around the chamber, searching for any sign of the guardian Jeane spoke of. For a moment, everything seems still. Then, she sees it—an immense, dark shape looming in the corner, its presence so overwhelming it seems to absorb the very light. It turns, slowly, its attention shifting from Varrika to Seraphine. A low, guttural growl rumbles through the room, making the hair on her arms stand on end.
Seraphine freezes, her heart leaping into her throat. She feels a sudden, desperate need to retreat, to get away from this ancient horror before it can move. But something stops her—the faint, almost imperceptible sound of a second voice, coming from deeper within the tower.
"Varrika?" The voice is strained, urgent. It sounds like Halie. "Varrika, answer me!"
The guardian's attention wavers, its head swiveling back towards Varrika. Seraphine sees her chance, slim as it is. She must act now, before the creature refocuses on her.
Seraphine takes a single, silent step forward, her mind racing through spells and incantations. A barrier spell, perhaps? No, too slow. An illusion? Possibly, but against something so ancient? She settles on a simple, powerful ward—one designed to repel undead and banish negative energy. "By the light of day, I command thee to cease thy pursuit," she whispers, her voice gaining strength as she begins to weave the magic around herself. The air crackles with power, and the guardian recoils slightly, its growl turning into a snarl of frustration.
As the ward flares into existence, Seraphine feels its strength surge through her. It won't hold for long against something this powerful, but it might buy her enough time to reach Varrika. "Halie?" she calls out, her voice echoing in the chamber. "I'm here! We need to move now!"
She takes another step towards Varrika, her eyes fixed on the unconscious elf. The guardian’s snarl deepens, a sound of pure malice. Seraphine knows she has only moments before it overcomes its magical repulsion. She must be quick. "Varrika!" she shouts, her voice echoing off the stone walls. "Wake up! We have to go!"
The sound of running footsteps approaches from the tunnel behind her, and Seraphine prays it’s Merrin or Halie, not some fresh horror the tower has conjured. She reaches out with one hand, her fingers brushing against Varrika's shoulder, trying to rouse her friend as the guardian's rage builds like a coming storm.*
