Round 58 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine steps into the new tunnel, the air grows colder and the runes on the walls pulse with an otherworldly energy. The scent of decay and magic envelops her, making her nostrils flare. She takes a tentative step forward, her staff at the ready. Suddenly, the tunnel floor gives way beneath her foot, and she finds herself tumbling through a hidden trapdoor. The sound of rushing water fills her ears as she plummets downward, the darkness around her illuminated only by the faint glow of the runes above. She lands hard on a rocky surface, the wind knocked from her lungs. As she struggles to catch her breath, she realizes that she's landed in a narrow, winding passageway, the walls lined with ancient carvings that depict a long-forgotten civilization. The air is stale and musty, and she can hear the distant sound of dripping water echoing off the stone. A faint, flickering light emanates from torches set into the walls, casting eerie shadows on the ground. Seraphine's heart races as she looks around, trying to get her bearings. She knows that she needs to move quickly, before whatever is waiting for her in the depths of the tower makes its presence known. Do you want to investigate further or try to find a way back up?
I descend through the air behind Seraphine's falling form, my wings beating hard to control my descent into the darkness below. The new tunnel walls are slick with moisture and pulsing with that same malevolent rune light from above—the entire place feels like a living, breathing thing trying to swallow us whole. Too deep already, I think as I circle warily in the narrow space. We need to move fast before whatever's below has time to gather forces.
I spot Seraphine struggling to her feet near the bottom of my field of vision, and I angle towards her position. The sound of dripping water echoes from somewhere nearby—underground streams are never good omens—and the air is thick with that same decay-and-magic scent as before. Stay alert, I remind myself as I descend closer. The tower isn't just letting us pass.
I look around at the cramped space we've fallen into, my heart hammering against my ribs. The air here is even colder and damper than above, thick with the scent of ancient stone and something else—something rotten and decayed. The flickering torchlight casts eerie shadows across the walls, making the intricate carvings seem to writhe and twist. Every instinct screams at me that this is a mistake, but there’s no going back now.
"I think we're in some kind of old maintenance tunnel," I call out to Jeane, my voice echoing slightly in the confined space. My eyes dart from side to side, searching for any sign of immediate danger. "The carvings are different from what we saw upstairs—they seem older, more primitive."
I take a tentative step forward, my staff held out in front of me like a shield. The sound of dripping water grows louder, coming from somewhere deeper within the passage. I flinch at every strange noise, half-expecting some monstrous creature to burst from the darkness.
"This place feels... alive," I mutter under my breath, more to myself than to Jeane. "Like it knows we're here and doesn't want us to leave."
I risk a glance back up the way we came, but all I can see is a small circle of pale light far above—the trapdoor through which we fell. It's closed now, sealing us in with whatever lies ahead. A cold dread settles in my stomach.
"We should keep moving," I say, trying to sound braver than I feel. "Before whatever's down here finds us first."
I begin to make my way deeper into the passage, my movements slow and deliberate. The air grows heavier with each step, pressing down on me like a physical weight. Every shadow seems to hold a threat, every sound a potential ambush. Yet, I push forward, driven by the desperate need to find Merrin and Varrika—and escape this accursed tower once and for all.
