Round 55 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

Seraphine's voice echoes off the stone walls as she calls out to Merrin and Varrika, her heart pounding in her chest. The scuttling creature's frantic scratching grows louder, more insistent, as if it's trying to lead them out of the pit. Suddenly, a small, worm-like head pokes out from beneath the rubble, its beady eyes fixed on Seraphine. The creature begins to burrow faster, its body undulating as it moves through the darkness.
I watch Seraphine call out to Merrin and Varrika from above—she’s alive at least—and my gaze shifts to the writhing creature below as it begins burrowing frantically. This is what I get for trusting Halie with anything more complex than lighting a campfire: trapped allies, loose demons, and now we're negotiating with... that. The thing looks like a nightmare worm with too many legs and eyes that glisten with malice in the runic light. I descend slowly through the air, maintaining altitude above its reach. The creature's attention snaps to me as I approach—it seems to sense magic—and it recoils briefly before resuming its frantic burrowing. This is a fool’s errand, I think grimly. Probably lured Merrin and Varrika into this mess with promises of treasure or escape. But we need them back, so fine. Let's deal with the lesser demon first. "You," I say coldly to the creature below. "Cease your thrashing at once." My voice cuts through the chamber like a razor, carrying an edge of compulsion that makes even the runes on the walls flicker in response. The worm-creature freezes mid-squirm, its head swiveling towards me with unnatural speed. Its many eyes fix on my position above. "I am Jeane Cromwell," I announce, letting my wings beat once for emphasis—slowly, deliberately. "You will answer my questions, and you will do so truthfully." This is a calculated risk; demons of this rank are typically bound by deals or curses, but loose ones are unpredictable. Still, I need information quickly: what it did with Merrin and Varrika, its purpose here, and whether it can actually help us bypass the guardian. "What manner of entity are you?" I begin, circling slowly above. "How were those below lured into your pit? And more importantly—can you lead them out again?"
I watch as Jeane descends from above, her powerful wings beating a steady rhythm in the air. The worm-thing freezes at her command, its many eyes fixed on her with a chilling intelligence. I feel a shiver run down my spine at the sight of it—it's clear this creature is far more than a simple burrowing demon.
As Jeane begins her interrogation, I strain to hear the creature’s response, but its voice remains silent. Instead, its body language shifts, writhing with a newfound purpose. It seems to be communicating through some kind of magical gesture, its limbs and appendages moving in an intricate pattern.
The runes on the walls begin to pulse faster, their light growing brighter as the creature’s movements intensify. A low humming sound fills the chamber, and I can feel the power building around us—it's like the air itself is being charged with arcane energy.
I take a step back from the edge of the pit, my staff held ready in front of me. The feeling of magic in the air is becoming overwhelming, and I know that whatever Jeane is doing is having a profound effect on the environment around us.
Suddenly, one of the runes near the creature flares to life, casting a blinding white light across the entire chamber. The worm-thing screams—a high-pitched, otherworldly sound that makes my ears ache—and then it begins to burrow even faster, its body disappearing into the stone floor with unnatural speed.
I look up at Jeane, my eyes wide with both fear and awe. "Did you see that?" I call out, my voice barely audible over the humming of the runes. She doesn’t answer right away, her gaze fixed on the spot where the creature vanished.
The sound of frantic digging fills the air, and then, without warning, a massive section of the floor near Merrin and Varrika's voices collapses inward, creating a new hole that leads down into the darkness below. A gust of cold, fetid air rushes up from the opening.
I feel my heart skip a beat as I realize what has happened—the creature has created a new path for us to follow, a way out of this trapped chamber and down to our missing companions. The runes on the walls continue to pulse, their light now illuminating the new tunnel.
*I turn to Jeane, my expression a mix of relief and worry. "That... that was incredible," I say, my voice filled with both amazement and concern. "But where does it lead? And how do we know it's safe?"
