Jeane's signal whistle echoes up from the pit, followed by a deafening crash and a thunderous rumble. The ancient Prison Guardian stirs, its malevolent gaze fixed on Varrika as it slowly rises from the depths. The air around it shimmers with dark energy, and its twisted, scaly flesh seems to writhe like living shadow. As Seraphine steps into the teleportation circle, ready to rescue her companions, the guardian's eyes lock onto the wizard, and it takes a step forward, its massive form filling the staircase. The New Ward Activation intensifies, causing the air to thicken with otherworldly energy, making it harder for Seraphine to focus on her teleportation spell. The Force can feel the pressure building - will Seraphine be able to complete the teleportation and reach her companions in time, or will the Prison Guardian overwhelm them before she can act?

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane descends in silence, her wings tucked tight against her back, her movements controlled and almost liquid as she drops down the stone staircase into the depths below. The darkness here is thicker than above—some ancient magic dampening light and sound—and even with her enhanced vision, she can barely make out more than shapes moving in the gloom ahead. This is worse than I feared. She mutters under her breath, her red eyes scanning every shadow for movement.

The scuttling sounds grow louder as she descends, and now she can hear Merrin's voice calling out warnings—at least the rogue is still conscious and able to signal. Good. That means Varrika probably isn't immediately overwhelmed. Jeane draws her heavy mace as she reaches the bottom of the staircase, the weapon humming with dark energy as she channels a spell into its head. Stay quiet, stay hidden, and don't do anything stupid down here, girls. I'm coming.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

As I step into the teleportation circle, my heart hammers against my ribs like a trapped bird. The swirling vortex of light and shadow threatens to consume me entirely, but I can still feel the pull of Jeane's presence below, her desperate need for aid a tangible force in the air. The Prison Guardian's eyes bore into mine with malevolent intent, its massive form blocking my path to safety, but I know I have no choice—Merrin and Varrika are down there, at the mercy of whatever Halie has unleashed.
The ancient magic ward pulses around me, its power now a physical weight pressing down on my shoulders. The air is thick with it, making each breath an effort. But I must not falter. I focus my will, channeling every ounce of my magical strength into the teleportation spell. The runes on the ground begin to glow brighter, their light cutting through the gloom that clings to the stairwell.
Suddenly, a deafening roar fills the air, and the ground beneath my feet trembles violently. The Prison Guardian lets out another bone-chilling screech, its attention now fully fixed on me. I can see the malice in those eyes, the hunger for destruction. It takes a lumbering step forward, its claws scraping against the stone, and I know I have mere moments before it reaches me.
With a final word of power, I complete the spell, and the world around me dissolves into that swirling vortex. I feel myself being pulled, my body disintegrating into motes of light and shadow, and then—
I am somewhere else entirely. The air is cool and damp, heavy with the scent of earth and decay. I land hard on a rough, uneven surface, the impact knocking the wind from my lungs. As I struggle to my feet, coughing and gasping for breath, my eyes adjust to the dim light filtering down from above.
This is not the pit where Merrin and Varrika fell; this is some kind of chamber, its walls lined with what appears to be ancient runes. A single source of light glows faintly in the center—Jeane's signal beacon, still active. The scuttling sounds are louder here, a constant, maddening rhythm coming from all around me.
The Prison Guardian is nowhere to be seen, but I can feel its presence, a dark weight pressing down on my soul. It knows I'm here. It's waiting.
I take a deep breath, steadying myself. This isn't the plan we had, but it's the only path forward now. Merrin and Varrika need me. With a grim determination settling over me like a cloak, I draw my staff and begin to cast the first of what I suspect will be many defensive spells.
Whatever lies ahead in this accursed place, whatever horrors Halie has unleashed—we will face them together.
