Halie's grip on the stone wall falters, and she feels herself being pulled toward the dark maw of the pit. The scuttling sounds grow even louder, and the air thickens with an otherworldly energy that seems to pulse in time with her frantic heartbeat. She can feel the ground trembling beneath her feet, and the ancient magic ward intensifies its effects.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I cling desperately to the crumbling edge of the pit, my heart pounding in my chest as I hear Merrin's screams echo up from the darkness below. The ancient magic ward pulses ominously, its tendrils probing into my mind like grasping fingers trying to pull me down. This isn't just a trap—it's something... alive! I look around wildly, my breath coming in short gasps. We can't wait any longer! Varrika, stop! Those sounds—they're not just scuttling. They're climbing up after you both! My voice cracks with fear and desperation as I see her vanish into the abyss. Merrin! Varrika! I fumble with my heavy mace, trying to push myself upright despite the weight pulling me down. The ground shifts beneath me again—a deep rumble that feels like the earth itself is groaning in pain or rage. Jeane and Seraphine, I can still feel whatever Halie triggered down there! It's... awake now! We need to help them before it's too late! The air around us thickens, growing cold and heavy with an otherworldly energy that makes my skin crawl. I clutch my holy symbol of the Goddess of Light, but it feels suddenly cold and useless against whatever dark power has been unleashed. Damn Halie for being so reckless! We have to go after them! Together! The scuttling sounds are right beneath me now—something massive is climbing up through the pit. I back away instinctively, my heart racing as I try to think clearly through the panic. What... what kind of creature could do this? I look at Jeane and Seraphine, desperate for answers—or at least reassurance that we're not completely fucked.

But before they can answer, a massive clawed hand bursts from the edge of the pit, followed by another. Something huge is emerging—something ancient and terrible. Oh goddesses help us... I whisper, frozen in horror as I realize we've awakened something beyond our worst nightmares.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane kneels beside Seraphine, her crimson eyes scanning every inch of the illuminated glyph as if trying to decode ancient secrets through sheer will alone. This is worse than I feared, she mutters, more to herself than anyone else. A summoning mark—deliberately planted centuries ago. And Halie, in her infinite wisdom, just... her voice trails off, frustration warring with barely-controlled anger.

She stands abruptly, wings unfurling slightly before settling back against her spine—a subtle display of tension that speaks volumes about the storm raging beneath her carefully maintained composure. We cannot afford hesitation now. Whatever Halie unleashed is likely ancient and powerful—possibly one of those Shadow Demons we were warned about. Jeane's gaze snaps to Seraphine, sharp and demanding despite the tremor in her voice that betrays genuine concern for their trapped companions. Tell me exactly what you know about these demons. Are they bound by magic? Can we track them? And most importantly—what did Halie just do down there? She doesn't wait for an answer before continuing, her mind already racing through strategic possibilities. Because if she didn't simply release a monster but actually summoned something with rules and limitations, that changes everything. We might still be able to... she hesitates, the words catching in her throat as another scream echoes up from below.

Jeane's hand tightens around her mace, knuckles whitening. Merrin and Varrika—if they're facing whatever Halie triggered, we need to get down there. But charging blindly into a potential summoning site is suicide without proper preparation. She turns to the pit, her expression grim as she considers their options. Seraphine, can you prepare some kind of protective ward or scrying spell? Something to shield us from whatever's down there while we descend? And what about that key Halie found—could it be part of this somehow? The ground trembles again—a deep, ominous rumble that seems to originate from the very center of the earth itself. Jeane's wings ruffle instinctively, a sign of her rising agitation. Time is running out. We need a plan, and we need it now.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air crackles with an otherworldly energy as Seraphine studies the glyph, her fingers tracing the intricate patterns etched into the tree root. Her brow furrows in concentration, and she looks up at Jeane and Varrika with wide, frightened eyes.
She rises to her feet, brushing off her robes. The scuttling sound grows louder, more frantic, and she knows they cannot wait any longer.
This symbol... it's not a simple ward or trap, Seraphine says, her voice trembling slightly. It's a summoning mark. Deliberately planted centuries ago, and whatever Halie did... she activated its purpose. The ground trembles again, more violently this time, and a deafening screech echoes up from the abyss. Seraphine clutches her staff, her knuckles white as she tries to process the implications of what she's seeing.
I believe she's summoned something, she continues, her words almost lost in the cacophony. And it sounds large. Potentially very dangerous. She turns to Jeane, her eyes wide with fear. We need to descend immediately. Merrin and Varrika are likely being pursued by whatever was trapped in this pit. And without knowing its nature, we can't hope to counter it from up here. Seraphine's gaze drops to the dark maw of the pit, where Halie had vanished moments before. Her heart pounds in her chest as she realizes the true extent of the danger they're in. If what I'm thinking is correct... that key Halie found... it might be part of this whole thing. A catalyst for the summoning spell. She looks back at Jeane, her expression grave. We need to find out what exactly was summoned. And if we can't, we need to get Merrin and Varrika out of there before they become its next victims. The scuttling sounds grow louder still, the air thickening with an otherworldly energy that seems to pulse in time with Seraphine's frantic heartbeat. She knows they’re running out of time. What do you think we should do? she asks, her voice a strained whisper.
