Halie's eyes are fixed on the pit, her face ashen with fear. She can't move, her hands gripping the stone wall for dear life. The scuttling sounds grow louder still, and she knows she must act quickly or risk being pulled into the darkness alongside Merrin. The air around them begins to distort further, the New Ward Activation intensifying its effects. The ground trembles, and a section of the wall behind Halie bursts open, revealing a dark, gaping maw that seems to stretch down into the depths of the earth.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I stare into the abyss where Merrin vanished, my heart pounding in my chest. The scuttling sounds grow louder, more frantic, and I know we cannot wait any longer. Halie may have triggered some ancient trap or released a terrible threat, but if so, we must face it together.

I turn to Jeane and Seraphine, my voice firm with determination. We cannot let Merrin face whatever this is alone. If something goes wrong down there—and given Halie's track record, something inevitably will—we need to be ready to support them or rescue them if necessary. I glance at the dark, swirling vortex that now occupies the center of the abyss. It seems to beckon me closer, promising both power and peril in equal measure. We need a plan, I say, my voice growing stronger as I think of Merrin and Varrika, our friends who are now trapped in the depths of this accursed tower. And I think I have one. But it will require all of our skills, and none of us can afford to hesitate when we reach the bottom. I turn my attention to the pit, the ground trembling beneath my feet as another deep rumble shakes the very bones of the earth itself. The air around us thickens with an otherworldly energy, and I know that whatever is down there, it is aware of our presence. It knows we are here.

The ground trembles again, another deep rumble that seems to travel up through the soles of my feet and into my bones. The scuttling sound grows louder, more frantic. Whatever is down there, it’s not waiting patiently anymore. "We cannot let Merrin or Varrika face whatever this is alone," I say, my voice growing stronger as I think of our friends. "If something goes wrong down there—and given Halie's track record, something inevitably will—we need to be ready to support them or rescue them if necessary."

I feel a chill run down my spine at Jeane's words about the dangers ahead, my mind racing as I try to process the enormity of what we've stumbled into. The scuttling sound grows louder still, the air thickening with an otherworldly energy that seems to pulse in time with Halie's frantic heartbeat.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's expression darkens as she hears the scuttling sounds grow louder and more frantic, the ancient magic ward intensifying its effects. This is exactly why I wanted to understand what Halie triggered before committing resources. She glares at the pit where Merrin vanished, her voice tight with barely-suppressed anger and concern.

Her hand moves instinctively towards her mace as another tremor shakes the ground—stronger this time—but she forces herself to wait for Seraphine's analysis of the glyph. Every moment we delay could mean life or death for Merrin and Varrika, but charging blindly into ancient magic we don't understand is suicide. Jeane kneels beside Seraphine, studying the illuminated symbols with intense focus despite her growing impatience. This glyph—it has to mean something specific. Wards like this usually have fail-safes or... counter-spells built in. If Halie disabled a defensive barrier, we need to know what's left exposed. Her crimson eyes flicker towards the dark maw of the pit, then back to Seraphine. Can you decipher it yet? Or do we need more context—other ward markings, door symbols, something from your magical research? The scuttling sound grows so loud now that it echoes up through the stone, and Jeane knows they can't wait much longer. But she also refuses to sacrifice her entire party because one member acted carelessly.

She turns to Varrika with a grim expression. If you're going down there to find Merrin—and I understand why you feel you must—then be extremely careful. Assume whatever Halie triggered is still active and potentially hostile. Stay alert for magical traps, summoned creatures, or structural instability. Jeane's wings ruffle with barely-contained tension as she adds, And if things go sideways down there, signal us immediately. We'll descend to extract you both. The ground trembles again—the hardest yet—and Jeane rises to her feet, mace in hand. Seraphine—anything yet? Because whatever's happening below is escalating fast, and I'm out of patience for waiting while our friends are in danger.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

The air crackles with ancient energy as Seraphine studies the glyph, her brow furrowed in concentration. Her fingers trace the intricate patterns etched into the tree root, feeling the hum of power beneath her touch.
She looks up at Jeane and Varrika, her expression grave. "This symbol—it's not a simple ward or trap. It's a summoning mark." Her voice is low, almost reverent, tinged with a hint of fear. "The way it's integrated with the root means this tree was deliberately planted here, possibly centuries ago. And whatever Halie did... she activated its purpose."

The ground trembles again, more violently this time, and a deafening screech echoes up from the abyss. The scuttling sound is now a frantic scrabbling, getting closer by the second.
"I believe she's summoned something," Seraphine continues, her words almost lost in the cacophony. "And it sounds large. Potentially very dangerous."
She turns to Jeane, her eyes wide.* "We need to descend immediately. Merrin and Varrika are likely being pursued by whatever was trapped in this pit. And without knowing its nature, we can't hope to counter it from up here."
