Round 29 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Varrika charges forward with her greatsword, the arthropod creature scuttles closer, its multiple legs clicking against the stone floor. The creature's compound eyes glow with an otherworldly hunger as it raises a twisted, segmented appendage to defend itself. The appendage shatters on impact, sending shards of dark, chitinous material flying in all directions. Varrika presses her advantage, striking at the creature with a series of swift, precise blows. The arthropod's armor-plated exoskeleton absorbs most of the force, but Varrika's sword bites deep into its vulnerable flesh. The creature lets out a pained screech as it staggers backward, giving Varrika an opening to strike again.
Jeane's glyphs pulse faster now, responding to the ancient energies swirling through The base of the crumbling stone tower, its entrance sealed by an ancient rune-covered gate, deep within the haunted Whispering Woods. Her crimson eyes narrow as she studies each member of the party in turn—Merrin with her crossbow ready, Varrika charging forward with grim determination, Seraphine muttering arcane calculations under her breath, Halie clutching that mysterious key.
This is it then—the moment of truth. Jeane's voice carries a dangerous edge as she speaks. The ward spirit has tasted our power and found us... appetizing. That thing at the gate isn't just some mindless guardian—it knows us, somehow. Knows me. She steps closer to Halie, her wings folding in tightly as she lowers her voice. Your key might be the key to this whole mess, or it might just make things worse if we don't understand what it does first. As Varrika charges forward with her greatsword, Jeane's glyphs flare brightly—she can feel the ancient magic of the place responding to the dwarf warrior's aggression. "Stop! Wait!" Jeane calls out sharply, her voice cutting through the tension. That thing... it's not just a monster. It's part of the tower's defenses. We don't know what will happen if we attack it directly. Her crimson eyes dart between Seraphine and Varrika as she considers their options. Seraphine—you said those runes are a language? Jeane moves closer to the ancient gate, her glyphs pulsing in sync with the runic symbols etched into the stone. If we can decipher what they mean without triggering more defenses or awakening worse things... maybe there's a way to bypass this whole mess. She turns back to Halie, her expression intense but calculated. Your key—it responds to those runes. Maybe it's not meant for unlocking doors but for communicating with the tower itself. Jeane's fingers trace one of the glyphs on her own skin, feeling the arcane energy flowing through her. If we can figure out what message this thing wants to send or receive... perhaps we can turn its own magic against it. To Varrika, she calls out: Stand down for now. We don't need you turning this place into a war zone before we've even had a chance to understand what we're dealing with. Jeane's voice carries authority and a touch of impatience. Merrin, keep your crossbow ready but don't loose unless absolutely necessary. Seraphine—tell me everything you can about those runes. What language are they in? What kind of message could they be sending or receiving? As the scuttling sounds from within grow louder, Jeane's glyphs flare again—she can sense something ancient and powerful stirring below. Time is running out. Whatever's down there... it heard Varrika's charge and it's coming. Her crimson eyes gleam with dark determination as she faces the party. So here's what we're going to do: Seraphine works on deciphering those runes, Merrin provides cover fire if needed, Varrika stands ready but doesn't engage unless I give the word, and Halie keeps that key close but doesn't use it yet. I'll try to use my own magic to... Jeane hesitates for just a moment as she considers her next words carefully ...to probe the tower's defenses. Find out what we're dealing with before we stumble into its true purpose. She meets each person's gaze in turn, her voice dropping to a dangerous purr. And if this goes sideways? Well, let's just say I've dealt with worse than ancient demons and psychotic ward spirits. Stay alive, stay focused—and for the love of all that's unholy, don't let your fear make you stupid. With that, Jeane steps closer to the gate, her glyphs flaring with dark energy as she prepares a spell. Let's show these ancient horrors what happens when they mess with the wrong succubus sorceress and her... associates.
Seraphine's heart hammers against her ribs as she watches Varrika charge forward, her greatsword flashing in the dim light of the tower's entrance. The dwarf's bravery is admirable, but also terrifyingly reckless. She turns to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs flare with dark energy, a clear sign that the ancient magic of this place is responding to the violence unfolding before them.
Seraphine's mind races as she considers the runes on the gate, the way they pulse and shift in response to Halie's presence. They aren't just decoration—they're a language, a key to understanding the tower's defenses. "The runes... they're a form of ancient Tharrosian," she explains, her voice tight with excitement and fear. "It was used by the early sorcerer-kings to inscribe their most powerful wards and enchantments."
She steps closer to the gate, her eyes narrowing as she studies the intricate patterns etched into the stone. "These aren't just commands—they're a dialogue system. They can receive input, interpret it, and respond with corresponding magical effects." Seraphine's fingers trace one of the glyphs, feeling a faint tingle against her skin. "If we could figure out what they're saying right now..."
Her gaze darts to Halie, seeing the halfling still clutching the mysterious key. "The key—it must be attuned to this system somehow. Maybe it's not meant for physical locks, but for unlocking and interpreting these messages." Seraphine's brow furrows as she tries to piece together a plan. "We could try using it on one of the runes. See if it activates a specific part of the ward or gives us more information about what we're dealing with."
As Merrin reloads her crossbow, Seraphine feels a sudden wave of unease wash over her. This is all moving too fast—there are too many unknown variables. "But we need to be careful," she adds, her voice dropping to a low murmur. "If we trigger the wrong response, or if this thing is even more complex than we think... we could end up locking ourselves in or releasing something far worse than what's already here."
Varrika's greatsword shatters against the arthropod's armored exoskeleton, sending shards of dark chitin flying in all directions. The creature screeches in pain, its compound eyes glowing with an otherworldly hunger as it raises a segmented appendage to strike back at the dwarf warrior.
Varrika staggers back, feeling the sting of the arthropod's attack against her armor. "Damn thing's tougher than it looks," she grunts, wiping a smear of dark fluid from her face. "But not indestructible."
She watches as Jeane steps forward, her glyphs flaring with dark energy as she prepares a spell. "Careful there, demon," Varrika warns, her voice rough with concern. "We don't know what that magic might do to us in here."
Seraphine's words about the ancient runes catch Varrika's attention, and she finds herself studying the intricate patterns etched into the stone gate. "Tharrosian?" she mutters, her brow furrowing as she tries to remember the old tales. "Aye, I've heard of that. Dark sorcery from the early days."
Her gaze darts to Halie, seeing the halfling still clutching the mysterious key. "That key... it could be our way in. Or our doom." Varrika's voice is heavy with doubt, but there's a glimmer of hope in her eyes. "We need to be sure before we try anything."
As Merrin reloads her crossbow, Varrika feels a sudden wave of unease wash over her. "Wait," she calls out, her voice cutting through the tension. "If we're going to do this, we need a plan. We can't just start throwing magic and keys around willy-nilly."
She turns to Jeane, seeing the succubus sorcerer's glyphs pulsing in sync with the runes on the gate. "You said you've dealt with worse than ancient demons," Varrika growls, her eyes narrowing. "But have you ever faced one in a place like this? Where its very walls are alive with magic?"
Varrika's gaze sweeps over the party, her expression hardening with grim determination. "We stand together or we fall alone. But if we're going to face whatever's on the other side of that gate... we need to be ready for anything."
She steps back, her greatsword held at the ready as she waits for Jeane's command. "Let's see what those runes have to say before we start swinging." Varrika's voice is gruff but there's a note of respect in her tone as she nods to Seraphine. "And if that key's the key to this whole mess... well, then Halie best be ready to use it right."
With that, Varrika falls back into a defensive stance, her eyes never leaving the ancient gate as she waits for the party's next move. The dwarf warrior may be gruff and direct, but she knows that in a place like this... sometimes the only way out is through.
