As we round the next curve in the winding staircase, the flicker of movement I saw out of the corner of my eye reappears, this time closer. A pale, gaunt figure steps into view, its eyes glowing with an otherworldly light as it regards us with a malevolent grin. The air seems to thicken with tension as it regards us with a slow, deliberate pace, its bony fingers drumming against the stone wall behind it. Jeane's voice is sharp and commanding, her words laced with a mixture of urgency and warning—Stay close together. We don't know what this thing is or what it wants. Varrika's greatsword is raised, ready to strike, while Halie's hand tightens around the silver cross at her neck. I keep my mace at the ready, my eyes locked on the pale figure as it takes another step closer. Suddenly, it freezes, its gaze fixed intently on something beyond us. The air seems to vibrate with anticipation as it takes a deep breath, and in that moment, a low, ominous growl rumbles from its throat—a sound that sends shivers down my spine.

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I keep my eyes locked on the pale figure as it takes another step closer, its bony fingers drumming against the stone wall behind it. Jeane's voice is sharp and commanding, her words laced with a mixture of urgency and warning—Stay close together. We don't know what this thing is or what it wants.

I can feel the weight of my greatsword in my hand, the metal cool against my scarred skin. My wings tense at my back, ready to take flight at a moment's notice if this creature makes any sudden moves. But for now, I remain rooted to the spot, my stance wide and my feet planted firmly on the cold stone.

Next to me, Halie clutches her silver cross tightly, her knuckles white as she stares at the gaunt figure with a mixture of fear and determination. Merrin keeps her mace raised, her halfling form crouched low and ready to strike if necessary. I can feel the tension in the air, the weight of our collective fear and uncertainty pressing down on us like a physical force.

But beneath that fear, there is something else—something that feels almost like a spark of excitement at the prospect of facing this unknown threat head-on. It's the same feeling I've had in the heat of battle before, that moment when everything slows down and all of my senses come alive with a sudden clarity.

I take a deep breath, my wings flaring slightly as I shift my weight from foot to foot. The creature takes another step closer, its glowing eyes fixed intently on something beyond us. And then, suddenly, it freezes—its gaze fixed on something behind us, its body tense and ready to spring into action at a moment's notice.

I hear a low, ominous growl rumble from its throat—a sound that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end—and I know that whatever is coming, it is not going to be pretty.

So I do the only thing I can do— I step forward, my greatsword raised high and my wings flared wide, ready to meet this new threat head-on. Because in this accursed tower, with the Time-Splitting Sword still waiting to be claimed and our unity tested at every turn, there is no room for hesitation or fear.

We will face whatever comes our way together—or we will fall trying.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I tighten my grip on the silver cross until my knuckles turn white, the metal cold against my skin as I stare at the pale figure looming before us. This thing—whatever it is—exudes an aura of ancient malice that makes my stomach churn and my heart race in my chest. I can feel the power within my holy symbol pulsing with a strange, insistent energy, as if the entity itself is trying to communicate something through the metal. Next to me, Merrin crouches low, her mace raised and ready to strike, while Varrika steps forward, her greatsword held high and her wings flared wide in a display of aggression that makes my own breath catch. Jeane's voice cuts through the tense silence like a knife—Stay close together. We don't know what this thing is or what it wants. —and I find myself nodding in agreement even as something deep within me recoils at the thought of standing so near to such ancient power. But there's no time to hesitate. The creature takes another step closer, its glowing eyes fixed on something—someone?—behind us, and a low growl rumbles from its throat that makes the very stones beneath our feet seem to tremble. I can feel the fear rising within me like bile, but alongside it is a strange sense of... excitement? Anticipation? God, what am I thinking? This isn't the time for foolish heroics or misplaced courage. We're outmatched and outgunned in this cursed tower, facing down who knows what manner of ancient evil. My training as a cleric prepared me to heal wounds and offer guidance, not to confront eldritch horrors from beyond the veil of reality. And yet... and yet there's a part of me that craves this confrontation, that yearns to test my faith against whatever dark power animates this gaunt specter. It's as if the entity itself is calling out to me through my holy symbol—a siren song of ancient knowledge and forbidden secrets that makes my head swim with dizzying possibilities. Focus, Halie. This isn't about you or your desires or whatever strange pull this thing seems to have on your senses. This is about protecting the group—about keeping Jeane safe from whatever fate this entity seems determined to force upon her through its twisted manipulation of my holy symbol. I take a deep breath, steeling myself against the swirling emotions and conflicting impulses that threaten to overwhelm me. We need to get out of here, I say, my voice barely above a whisper but carrying in the oppressive silence of the passage. Before whatever's controlling this thing decides it wants more than just a quick snack.

We should try to circle around it—stay close to the walls where its movements are restricted. The words come out before I can fully think them through, but as soon as they leave my mouth, I know they're true. This isn't a fight we can win with brute force or magic—at least not yet. No, what we need is patience and cunning, the kind of slow-burn strategy that's more my speed than charging headfirst into battle. And whatever you do... I continue, addressing Varrika specifically now as she stands poised to strike. Don't let it touch you. I don't know what kind of corruption these things carry, but I doubt it'll be anything good. A shudder runs down my spine at the thought—ancient evil always comes with a price, and I have no intention of paying it with any of our lives if I can help it. We stick together, I say firmly, meeting each party member's eyes in turn. And we move as one. This thing may be ancient and powerful, but it's not invincible—not if we work together.

So with a deep breath and a silent prayer to whatever divine powers might still hear us in this place of shadows and despair, I begin to edge along the wall towards our left, my eyes never leaving the gaunt figure as it stands frozen mid-stare at whatever unseen horror has caught its attention. The others fall into formation behind me—Merrin close beside me with her mace held ready, Jeane bringing up the rear with a mixture of curiosity and barely suppressed excitement on her face that makes me worry for what she might do if left unchecked. Stay alert, I whisper as we begin our slow, careful advance. And for the love of all that's holy, keep your eyes open. Because in this cursed tower, with its ancient wards and twisted guardians, one misstep could mean the difference between life and death—and right now, my biggest fear isn't dying here in the dark. It's leading the others straight into whatever fresh hell awaits us at the bottom of these stairs. What have we gotten ourselves into? I wonder as we inch our way forward, the cold stone wall pressing against my back like a tombstone. But there's no time for doubt or second-guessing now—not when every footstep echoes ominously in the darkness and the air itself seems to hum with ancient power. No, all we can do is trust in each other—and pray that whatever awaits us at the bottom of these stairs isn't something even our combined skills and determination can overcome.
