Round 84 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the Liminal Wretch continues to speak, its voice echoing in Halie's mind, Jeane takes a step closer, her dark magic swirling around her. "You see, little priestess, this is what happens when faith falters," she says, her crimson eyes locked on Halie's. The air seems to thicken with anticipation, and the dark runes etched across her skin pulse with an inner light. The Liminal Wretch's response is immediate: "Ah, but what if she refuses? Then perhaps it is you who will suffer the consequences of her faithfulness." The creature's words hang in the air like a challenge, and Halie's eyes dart between Jeane and the Liminal Wretch. Jeane's offer hangs heavy between them—a blend of genuine care and calculated manipulation. Suddenly, the obsidian guardian speaks up, its glowing eyes fixed on the unfolding drama. "You are but a pawn in their game," it says, its voice low and menacing. "But if you choose to surrender your essence, I will grant you passage through the tower's wards."
The creature's words are laced with malice, and Halie's eyes widen in alarm. She turns to Jeane, her face set in a determined expression. "What do we do?" she asks, her voice barely above a whisper.
I watch the scene unfold between Jeane, Halie, and the Liminal Wretch with a mixture of fascination and growing unease. Jeane's offer to bear the burden of this temptation feels both heroic and deeply unsettling, a reminder of just how much we rely on her dark powers.
My mind races as I consider the options before us. On one hand, Jeane has proven herself invaluable in our previous encounters with supernatural threats. Her ability to manipulate and even consume essences could be the key to getting past this particular guardian. But on the other hand... what kind of price would we have to pay for such a service? What would surrendering Halie's essence, even willingly, mean for our party dynamics moving forward?
I turn my attention to Varrika and Merrin, seeing their own concerns reflected in their expressions. We are all thinking the same thing: this is a dangerous path to tread. But then again, isn't everything we've faced so far in this accursed tower dangerous?
As the obsidian guardian speaks up, its voice sending a chill down my spine, I feel a sudden surge of protectiveness towards Halie. The idea that she could be reduced to a 'pawn' in anyone's game, even one with such power, fills me with a cold fury. We came here seeking a legendary sword—not to trade away our companions' essences.
I step forward, my voice firm but measured. I appreciate the offer, Jeane, I say, my gaze sweeping over the group, but I think we need to consider this more carefully. Halie, what do you think? Is this really the only way through? I look at her directly, trying to gauge her resolve in the face of such a daunting test.
Turning back to the Liminal Wretch, I square my shoulders, a newfound confidence settling over me. As for you, creature... if we refuse your terms entirely, what then? Will you simply let us pass, or is this indeed some kind of test we must endure? My eyes narrow as I study its form, searching for any sign of weakness, any hint of how it might be defeated without resorting to such extreme measures.
I can feel the tension radiating from everyone around me, a mixture of fear and excitement, of loyalty and uncertainty. We stand on the precipice of something truly momentous—whether we will be forever changed by it remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: whatever path we choose, we must do so as a united front. Halie's faith, Jeane's magic, Merrin's cunning, Varrika's strength... all of it woven together forms the unbreakable bond that has kept us alive this long. And now, more than ever, we need to remember what brought us here in the first place: not for personal gain or sacrifice, but to face the darkness head-on and emerge victorious.
I look around at everyone—Merrin holding her mace, Varrika steady and concerned, Jeane with her dark wings unfurling, Seraphine calculating something. The air is thick with tension and magic, but underneath it all, I can feel the same thing pulling at us: we're a team. We've made it this far because we trust each other, even when things get scary. The Liminal Wretch's voice echoes in my head again, cold and insistent, but I push it aside. This feels wrong. Using my faith as... as bait? Sacrificing myself so Jeane can consume what's left? What kind of holy path is that? Yeah, I'm terrified of this thing touching my essence, but at the same time, something about the way it talks makes me think we're missing something. Like there's a bigger trap here if we play along too easily. I take a step back, my hand instinctively going to my silver cross necklace—the holy symbol that's supposed to protect me. But now this... creature knows its power. It's like having someone stare at your most precious possession while they make offers you're not sure are real. "Wait," I say softly, more to myself than anyone else. "If we do this—if I just give over my essence—what exactly happens? How does that solve anything? We still have to get through the tower, right? And what's to stop this thing from just... taking more later?"
I look at Jeane, not with accusation but with genuine confusion. "I appreciate you wanting to protect me," I say, my voice barely above a whisper, "but I don't understand how giving myself over solves anything long-term. We need to think about the whole picture, not just this one moment."
The obsidian guardian's words cut through the tension: "You are but a pawn in their game." A shiver runs down my spine. Suddenly, being offered as a sacrifice feels a lot less heroic and a lot more dangerous. I turn back to the others, my resolve strengthening despite the fear churning in my stomach. "What if... what if we don't play by its rules? What if instead of giving it what it wants, we find another way?" I glance at Seraphine, hoping her clever mind can work this out. "There has to be some kind of loophole, right? Something we're not seeing because we're too busy being scared?"
My hand tightens around my cross. It's not just about protecting myself anymore—it's about protecting all of us from walking into a trap we don't even know exists yet.
Jeane's crimson eyes flash as she considers Halie's words—her doubt, her hesitation. It's not what I expected from the little priestess.
Oh, sweet naive Halie, I say, a dangerous smile playing at my lips. You still don't understand how these games are played, do you? The creature doesn't care about your long-term survival—it wants your essence now, this moment. And while I appreciate your... moral qualms...My wings shift slightly, displeasure evident in the movement. Your hesitation might cost us all. I step closer to her, dark magic swirling around us like a protective cocoon. Listen closely, little priestess. What I offer isn't a sacrifice in the way you think—it's a strategic maneuver. I've consumed essences before: human, celestial, demonic. Your faith is... I pause, choosing my words carefully ...a delicacy to be savored, not wasted on this wretch. My gaze locks onto hers, intense and searching. You doubt me? After all we've faced together? I'm trying to protect you from the very thing you claim to serve—faith without wisdom is just... stupidity in a holy robe. I gesture dismissively at the obsidian guardian. And that thing? It's not our ally, Halie. It's another piece on this cursed board, waiting for us to make a mistake. Turning back to face the Liminal Wretch, I let my dark magic flare brightly for a moment before settling into an ominous glow. Very well, creature. You want essence? Then take it from me—if you can handle the price of crossing this particular succubus. My wings unfurl fully now, blocking out what little light filters through the tower entrance. As for your 'game'... let's play by my rules. I look back at Halie, and there's a warning in my eyes alongside genuine concern. Choose quickly, my devout friend. The longer we dither here, the more likely something far worse finds its way inside. And trust me when I say—you don't want to know what else is lurking in this accursed tower. My fingers trace intricate patterns in the air as I prepare a spell, just in case. So? What will it be? A leap of faith into my darkness... or a stumble into whatever fresh hell awaits us beyond that gate?
