Round 77 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The obsidian creature's form blurs, its core pulsing with an energy that seems to be drawing Halie's holy symbol towards it. As the symbol approaches, its light begins to envelop the creature, casting a warm glow over the chamber floor. The air vibrates with anticipation, and the growling from beyond the gate recedes, replaced by an expectant silence. The creature's voice takes on a deeper tone, echoing off the stone walls as it speaks: "Your faith is indeed intriguing, Halie. But to prove your strength, you must first confront the darkness within yourself." The creature's form begins to shift once more, its solidification now accompanied by a faint, eerie glow.
Jeane steps closer to Seraphine, her crimson eyes fixed on the obsidian creature as she considers the wizard's words about communication being necessary in this place. The magic radiating from the creature feels ancient and dangerous—a power that could grant salvation or damnation with equal ease. She senses an opportunity here, a test that could lead them to the legendary sword they seek... or to their graves. But something about Seraphine’s suggestion doesn’t sit right with Jeane. The demonic sorceress has dealt with enough ancient entities in her time to know that casual negotiation can be as dangerous as blind aggression. She watches as Halie raises her holy symbol, the light spilling across the chamber floor and seeming to draw a response from the creature—a faint glow emanating from its core. Interesting, Jeane thinks. That symbol isn’t just decorative.
Her gaze sweeps over the group—Halie with her holy symbol blazing, Merrin ready with her mace, Varrika radiating fierce determination. And Seraphine... already trying to negotiate with powers beyond their understanding. A small frown tugs at Jeane's lips as she sees it: the wizard’s naivety when dealing with ancient magic could be their undoing. Jeane's hand moves to the hilt of her sword—a magical blade forged in demonic fires—but still she doesn't draw it. Not yet. Instead, she meets Seraphine's eyes with a look that speaks volumes. "Talking to something like this... you're playing right into its hands," Jeane says softly, but her tone carries a warning edge. "These ancient guardians—creatures—they don’t respond to polite requests for information. They test. They probe. And if they sense weakness..." She lets the implication hang in the air. "...they’ll exploit it."
Her wings shift restlessly behind her as she takes another step closer to the creature, the heavy Mace forgotten in her hand for now. "This isn't about brute force," Jeane continues, more certain now as the pieces fall into place. "It's about sacrifice. About proving our willingness to pay the price demanded." Her gaze drifts to the darkness beyond the gate, where the growling intensifies once more. Something out there is listening. Watching.
A slow smile curves Jeane's lips—a predatory expression that speaks of centuries of manipulation and deals made with darker powers than this one before them now. "So we negotiate," she says finally, her voice dropping to a seductive purr as she turns back to the obsidian guardian. "But on our terms." Her eyes gleam with an inner fire as she continues, addressing the creature directly: "Show us what you are," Jeane challenges, her confidence radiating in every line of her body. "Prove that you're more than just another failed experiment or forgotten guard left behind by whoever built this cursed place."
She gestures at the pulsing symbol on its surface with a graceful sweep of her arm. "That sigil—it responds to magic. To faith." Jeane can feel it pulsing in time with Halie's holy symbol, creating an energy that both attracts and repels. "So tell us, creature: what kind of strength are you truly testing? And more importantly..." Her voice drops to a dangerous whisper. "...what will it cost us to pass your test and claim the prize that awaits beyond this threshold?"
Jeane’s mind races through possibilities—what could be hidden behind this gate that would require such a dark test? What ancient artifact or knowledge could be worth sacrificing something... or someone? If we’re lucky, she thinks, it's the Time-Splitting Sword itself. But if it’s something worse... Her wings tighten around her body unconsciously as an old fear stirs deep within her. No matter what it is—we have to be careful.
She glances back at the others, her expression a blend of concern and calculation. "We move forward together," Jeane says firmly, addressing the group now. "But we do it with our eyes open. Whatever this creature offers... whatever it demands..." Her gaze locks onto Halie for a moment. "...we weigh every word carefully. Because in deals like these?" She turns back to the obsidian guardian. "The fine print can be deadly."
Jeane takes another step forward, her posture tense and ready for whatever comes next. The air crackles with unspoken tension and promise. Whatever test this creature offers, Jeane is determined to face it head-on—both for the power they seek and to protect those who have become... unexpected allies in this cursed place. "Now then," she purrs, her voice a silken challenge as she fixes the obsidian guardian with a predatory stare. "Let’s see what you’re truly made of, shall we?"
I watch Jeane's reaction to my suggestion of communication with the creature, noting the sorceress's clear discomfort. There's wisdom in her concern, but also an impatience that borders on recklessness. Seraphine takes a slow, measured breath, her eyes never leaving the pulsing symbol on the obsidian guardian's surface. The energy radiating from it feels ancient and potent—a power that could be harnessed or destroyed depending on their next move.
Jeane is right about one thing: these ancient beings don't give information freely. They test. They probe. And they exploit weakness. But Seraphine also knows that sometimes, knowledge is the key to unlocking even the most guarded secrets. The wizard's fingers twitch at her sides, a familiar itch to trace the patterns of power in the air.
She turns to face Halie, who still holds her holy symbol aloft like a shield against the encroaching darkness. A flicker of something akin to jealousy crosses Seraphine's features before she quickly masks it with a calm, analytical expression. "Halie," she says softly, her voice carrying a note of respect and curiosity. "That symbol... it responds to this creature. What do you think it means?"
Seraphine’s gaze darts between the glowing artifact and the obsidian guardian, her mind racing with possibilities. If Halie's faith can interact with this test, perhaps there's a way to leverage that connection to gain insight without fully compromising their position. "Could your faith be what this... thing... is truly testing? The strength of your belief in the face of something so foreign and powerful?"
She takes a step closer to Halie, her tone dropping to a near-whisper, her voice trembling with a sudden, desperate urgency. "We came here seeking power. Knowledge. And if this creature holds the key to those things... then we must be willing to explore every path it offers us."
Seraphine's eyes lock onto Halie's, searching for understanding, for a shared purpose in the face of this daunting test. "Tell me what you see when you look at that symbol now. What does your goddess tell you about this darkness we're facing? And more importantly..." Her voice becomes a low, intense murmur. "...what would she have us do to pass its judgment?"
The air crackles around them, charged with unspoken tension and the promise of revelation. Seraphine can feel the weight of her companions' eyes on her as she makes her case, but she pushes past the discomfort, driven by a single, all-consuming goal: to understand this power, to claim it for herself and her party... no matter what price they must pay.
Varrika's eyes narrow as she watches the exchange between Seraphine and Halie. The dwarf's grip tightens on her mace, her knuckles bone-white against the weathered wood. Jeane's words about the dangers of negotiation with ancient entities echo in her mind, and she can't help but agree with the sorceress's assessment.
But as a veteran of countless battles, Varrika also knows that sometimes, the only way forward is through the very darkness that threatens to consume them. She takes a step closer to the obsidian guardian, her posture tense and ready for whatever comes next.
"Listen here," the dwarf growls, her voice low and dangerous. "We ain't here to play games with whatever forgotten power you think you are." She gestures at the pulsing symbol on the creature's surface. "That sigil there... it's testing us. Trying to figure out what we're made of."
Varrika's gaze sweeps over her companions—Halie with her holy symbol blazing, Merrin ready with her mace, Jeane already preparing for whatever fight might come. A grim smile tugs at the corner of her mouth. "And I'll tell you one thing: we're made of stone and steel. Of faith and fire." She meets Halie's eyes, seeing a flicker of understanding in their depths. "Whatever this thing wants from us... we've got it in spades."
The dwarf turns back to the obsidian guardian, her expression hardening into a mask of pure determination. "So you want strength? You want sacrifice?" Varrika takes another step forward, her voice rising to a near shout. "Then let's see what you've got! Because we ain't backing down from nothing. Not after all we've been through to get here."
She raises her mace, the weapon seeming to hum with an ancient power of its own. "But know this—we do this together. No one gets left behind. Not like..." Her voice catches, a hint of grief in her eyes before it's quickly masked by her usual grim determination. "We've lost enough already. We won't lose anyone else to whatever tricks you've got up your sleeve."
Varrika takes another step forward, the air crackling with unspoken tension and promise. Whatever test this creature offers, the dwarf is determined to face it head-on—both for the power they seek and to honor the sacrifices already made in this cursed place. "Now then," she growls, her voice a challenge as she fixes the obsidian guardian with a defiant stare. "Let's see what you're truly made of, shall we?"
