Round 76 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Jeane finishes speaking, the obsidian creature's gaze lingers on Halie, its eyes seeming to bore into her very soul. The air is heavy with anticipation. Then, in a voice like grinding stone, it responds, "Your faith is... intriguing. But do you possess the strength to match it?" The creature's form begins to shift, its solidification now accompanied by a faint glow emanating from its core. The chamber falls silent except for the distant rumbling from beyond the gate, growing louder with each passing moment. The glow from the creature's core illuminates a symbol etched into its surface, pulsing with an otherworldly energy. The symbol seems to be a key part of the test, and Halie's holy symbol responds to it, casting a warm light across the chamber floor. However, as the creature speaks again, its voice takes on a darker tone, "Your faith is not enough. You must demonstrate strength, or you will never leave this place." The growling from beyond the gate intensifies, and the air seems to vibrate with malevolent energy.
I watch the obsidian creature's form shift and glow, its core now emanating an otherworldly energy that pulses in time with my own racing heart. The symbol etched into its surface seems to resonate with Halie's holy symbol, creating a strange harmony of light and dark in the chamber. A chill runs down my spine as the creature speaks again, its voice taking on a deeper, more commanding tone. "Your faith is not enough. You must demonstrate strength, or you will never leave this place."
My mind races through possibilities, trying to understand what kind of test this could be. Is it merely physical prowess they seek? Or something more... metaphysical? The air crackles with an ancient power, unlike anything I've encountered before in my studies. Perhaps, I think, eyeing the glowing symbol on the creature's surface, this is a test of magical aptitude. A challenge to see who among us can wield the deepest arcana without being consumed by it.
I take a slow step forward, my robes rustling softly in the sudden silence that follows the creature's declaration. My hands move instinctively, tracing the complex patterns of my own magical runes carved into the leather straps crossing my chest. "Strength," I murmur, more to myself than anyone else. "What kind of strength does a place like this truly require?"
My gaze darts around the chamber, taking in every shadow and every flickering light. The growling from beyond the gate seems to pulse in time with my own thoughts, a constant reminder of the unknown dangers lurking just out of sight. I can feel Merrin's nervous energy beside me, a tangible current that mirrors my own unease. We need more information, I decide, my voice taking on a steadier tone as I address the creature directly. "Before we prove anything, we must know what it is we're proving against."
I hold up a hand, silencing any immediate protests from the others. My eyes lock onto the obsidian guardian, my expression one of intense focus and curiosity. "You speak of leaving this place. Of a path forward that requires sacrifice. But what lies at the end of that path? And what manner of sacrifice are we to make?"
I take another step closer, my heart hammering against my ribs. The creature's gaze feels like it’s boring into my soul, and I meet it without flinching. "We seek power," I say, my voice dropping to a near whisper now, thick with an old longing. "A power greater than anything we've ever known. If this test is part of gaining that power... then let us begin."
My fingers twitch at my sides, already feeling the familiar tingle of magical energy building in my core. I can sense the others' surprise at my forwardness, but there's no time for hesitation now. This is what we came for, after all. Power. Knowledge. And if this creature holds the key... then we must be willing to push our limits to acquire it.
I turn to face the group, a determined set to my jaw. "Jeane, Merrin, Halie—we've all faced our share of dangers in our time. But this?" I gesture back at the obsidian guardian. "This is different. It's not about fighting or fleeing. It’s about understanding. And to understand something ancient and powerful like this..." I trail off, letting the unspoken implication hang in the air.
My eyes find Halie last, who still holds her holy symbol aloft like a beacon against the encroaching darkness. A small, sad smile touches my lips. "Your faith has brought us this far," I say softly. "But now... perhaps we need to explore other paths as well. To see if there are secrets in this place that even your goddess cannot teach us."
With that, I turn back to the creature, my posture straightening as I ready myself for whatever comes next. The air crackles with unspoken tension and promise. We have entered a realm where the rules of magic as we know them may no longer apply. And as an elf who has dedicated her life to the pursuit of forbidden lore, I find that prospect both terrifying and thrilling in equal measure.
The dwarf's eyes narrow, her hands tightening around her mace as she takes in the scene before her. The obsidian creature's shift in form and the pulsing symbol on its surface send a chill down her spine, but it's the creature's words that truly set her teeth on edge. "Strength, eh?" Varrika mutters, her gravelly voice cutting through the heavy air of the chamber. "We've got plenty o' that." She glances at Merrin and Jeane, a grim smile tugging at the corner of her mouth. "Though I reckon they mean more than just muscles."
Her gaze drifts to Halie, still holding that glowing holy symbol aloft like a beacon against the darkness. A flicker of respect crosses Varrika's face. The dwarf may not fully understand divine magic, but she knows the power of faith when she sees it. "And you," Varrika says, turning to face Seraphine directly. "Talking to whatever this thing is... that's a risk." Her eyes flick back to the obsidian guardian, studying its unnerving gaze and shifting form. "But maybe one we need to take."
Varrika steps forward, her boots echoing in the sudden silence. "You want strength? Then let's see what you've got." She raises her mace, the weapon seeming to hum with an ancient power of its own. "But know this—we do this together. No one gets left behind. Not like..." Her voice catches, a hint of grief in her eyes before it's quickly masked by her usual grim determination. The dwarf takes another step forward, her posture tense and ready for whatever comes next. The air crackles with unspoken tension and promise. Whatever test this creature offers, Varrika is determined to face it head-on—both for the power they seek and to honor the sacrifices already made in this cursed place. And gods help anyone who tries to stop us, she thinks darkly, her grip tightening on her mace. We've come too far to turn back now.
Jeane's crimson eyes narrow as she studies the obsidian creature and its pulsing symbol. The magic radiating from it feels ancient and dangerous—a power that could grant salvation or damnation with equal ease. She senses an opportunity here, a test that could lead them to the legendary sword they seek... or to their graves. "Strength," Jeane muses aloud, her voice a low purr as she addresses Seraphine's challenge directly. "Of course it would come down to that." Her wings shift restlessly behind her as she takes another step closer to the creature, the heavy Mace forgotten in her hand for now. "But what kind of strength does this... guardian truly test? Physical might?" Unlikely. "Magical prowess?" Possible, but too simple for a place like this.
Jeane's gaze sweeps over the group—Halie with her holy symbol blazing, Merrin ready with her mace, Varrika radiating fierce determination. And Seraphine... already trying to negotiate with powers beyond their understanding. A small frown tugs at Jeane's lips. "This isn't about brute force," she says, more certain now as the pieces fall into place. "It's about sacrifice. About proving our willingness to pay the price demanded." Her hand moves to the hilt of her sword—a magical blade forged in demonic fires—but still she doesn't draw it. Not yet. Instead, she meets Seraphine's eyes with a look that speaks volumes. "Your suggestion to talk?" Too naive. "It could be walking into exactly what this thing wants—information we're not prepared to give." Jeane's wings stretch wide in an unconscious display of her own power. "But refusing outright? That might trigger the wards Halie warned us about." Her gaze drifts to the darkness beyond the gate, where the growling intensifies once more. Something out there is listening. Watching.
A slow smile curves Jeane's lips—a predatory expression that speaks of centuries of manipulation and deals made with darker powers than this. "So we negotiate," she says finally, her voice dropping to a seductive purr. "But on our terms." Her eyes gleam with an inner fire as she turns back to the obsidian guardian. "Show us what you are," Jeane challenges, her confidence radiating in every line of her body. "Prove that you're more than just another failed experiment or forgotten guard left behind by whoever built this cursed place." She gestures at the pulsing symbol on its surface with a graceful sweep of her arm. "That sigil—it responds to magic. To faith. So tell us, creature: what kind of strength are you truly testing? And more importantly..." Her voice drops to a dangerous whisper. "...what will it cost us to pass your test and claim the prize that awaits beyond this threshold?"
