Round 55 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Seraphine speaks, her words hang in the air like a challenge. The Liminal Wretch remains motionless, its gaze fixed on Merrin with an unnerving intensity. Suddenly, the creature's body begins to shift and writhe, its dark, shadowy tendrils stretching out towards Merrin like grasping fingers. Jeane's eyes narrow, her hands still poised to unleash her arcane energy. "No," she mutters, her voice low and urgent. "We can't let it touch her."
Varrika readies her crossbow, her finger tightening on the trigger. "I'll take point," she says, her voice firm. "If this thing attacks Merrin, I'll take it down."
Halie holds up her holy symbol, its light flickering with a fierce determination. "I'll protect her with my life," she says, her voice steady. The creature's tendrils draw closer, their darkness seeming to pulse with a malevolent energy. The party waits, tense and ready, as the Liminal Wretch prepares to strike.
Jeane's crimson eyes gleam in the torchlight as she studies the creature before them—a grotesque amalgamation of shadow and substance, its dark tendrils reaching out towards Merrin like grasping fingers. "A test of faith," she muses aloud, more to herself than to anyone else present. Her clawed fingers drum against her thigh in a quick staccato rhythm as she processes the implications. The sorceress' wings shift restlessly behind her back, the movement revealing glimpses of the intricate black and crimson sigils etched into their membranes—a subtle reminder of her own deep connection to dark magic and arcane knowledge. Her gaze sweeps across each member of their impromptu party in turn—Halie with her trembling hands gripping that holy symbol, Varrika steadying her crossbow, Seraphine already moving through arcane knowledge for countermeasures. "And I think," Jeane continues, voice low and intense, "that we're all here because we have faith. In our skills, yes—but more importantly, in each other." She gestures toward the creature with one clawed hand.* "It's watching us closely, I can feel it. So let's show it exactly what kind of faith drives us."
With that, Jeane takes a deep breath and steps forward—just a few paces, still maintaining distance but clearly positioning herself as the lead in this particular confrontation. Her hands begin to move in subtle patterns as she gathers arcane energy around her, wings spreading wide behind her back like a dark silhouette against what little light filters through the tower entrance. "Watch carefully," she warns softly, "because whatever this test is—whether it's genuine or just another trap—our response needs to be unified and deliberate." The air around her begins to crackle with barely contained power as Jeane prepares a spell that might very well trigger whatever ancient wards protect this place... but she seems willing to risk it if it means getting them all through this alive.
Her eyes narrow as the creature's tendrils stretch towards Merrin—an unmistakable threat. "No," Jeane mutters, her voice low and urgent. "We can't let it touch her." For a brief moment, something almost like regret flickers through those crimson eyes before hardening into cold calculation again. The sorceress knows better than most the dangers of dabbling in ancient powers—and yet here they are, faced with what appears to be some kind of twisted trial designed to test their faith. "Merrin," Jeane calls out, "I know I was harsh earlier. But this... whatever the hells it is, it's not here to judge our worth as adventurers. It's here to test our faith." Her gaze sweeps across each member of their party once more—Halie with her trembling hands gripping that holy symbol, Varrika steadying her crossbow, Seraphine already moving through arcane knowledge for countermeasures. "And I think," Jeane continues, "that we're all here because we have faith. In our skills, yes—but more importantly, in each other." She gestures toward the creature with one clawed hand.* "It's watching us closely, I can feel it. So let's show it exactly what kind of faith drives us."
I watch in horror as the Liminal Wretch's dark tendrils stretch towards Merrin, its grasp looking like it could tear her apart. My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic rhythm of fear and desperate resolve. Jeane's words echo in my mind—"a test of faith"—and I realize she's right. This isn't just about survival; it's about proving our worth.
I take a swift step forward, my hand darting out to clasp Merrin's arm before the creature can reach her. The contact is brief but electric, sending a jolt through my entire being as if I've touched something sacred. "No," I hiss under my breath, more to myself than anyone else. "We stand together."
My mind races, trying to recall every scrap of arcane lore I've ever learned about such tests of faith. Most are stories told in hushed whispers around campfires—tales of ancient guardians who would only allow the pure of heart to pass—but this feels different. More immediate. More dangerous. "Merrin," I say, my voice a strained whisper, "don't move. Don't even breathe if you can help it."
I turn my attention back to the creature, my eyes narrowing as I study its form—a grotesque amalgamation of shadow and substance that seems to shift and change in the flickering torchlight. Its gaze remains fixed on Merrin, a singular focus that sends a chill down my spine. "It sees Merrin," I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else. Perhaps because she represents... hope? Or perhaps because she is the most vulnerable among us. Whatever its purpose, it seems drawn to her specifically.
I feel a sudden surge of protectiveness towards the halfling scout. She may be small in stature, but she has proven her courage time and again. And now, faced with this twisted trial, her very life is on the line. I can't let it end like this—not for her, not for any of us.
My hand clenches into a fist at my side, my knuckles bone-white as I struggle to contain the fear and anger churning inside me. This isn't fair. None of this is. We were sent here to retrieve an artifact, not to play some twisted game with our lives as the stakes.
Yet even as the thought crosses my mind, I know it's futile to resist the reality before us. The tower has its rules, and we must find a way to navigate them if we hope to survive. To escape with the sword and our lives intact.
I look around at my companions—Jeane, Varrika, Halie—and see the same determination in their eyes. We've faced impossible odds before, but never like this. Never something so directly testing our resolve, our unity as a party. I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what's to come.
"We have to prove ourselves," I say, my voice firm despite the tremor running through it. "Show this... thing... that we are worthy of its trust."
My gaze falls back on the Liminal Wretch, and I feel a sudden, overwhelming desire to understand it. To learn its purpose here, its motivations. If we can get past this test, perhaps we can unravel more of the mysteries surrounding the Time-Splitting Sword itself.
"It's watching us," I whisper, the words almost lost in the air. "Waiting for our next move."
And so we stand there, frozen in that moment between fear and faith, waiting for whatever comes next. Whatever this creature decides our fate will be.*
I stare at the creature, my hands clasped tightly around my holy symbol. The silver feels cold against my skin, as if the metal itself is aware of the unholy presence before us. "This... this isn't right." My voice trembles, but not with fear—with anger. How dare this abomination play with our lives like we're pawns in some dark ritual? I take a step forward, my eyes locked on the shadowy thing. "If it wants faith, then fine. It'll get faith. But not like this—not by threatening one of us." My grip tightens until my knuckles turn white. "Merrin is family. We don't leave family behind."
I turn to Jeane, her arcane energy crackling dangerously around her. The sight should inspire confidence, but instead it sends a chill down my spine. "Jeane, lower your magic. Whatever this thing wants, we face it together—with our heads and hearts, not with firepower." My gaze sweeps over the group, taking in Varrika's steady crossbow, Seraphine's focused concentration, Merrin's frozen terror. "We need to understand what it means by 'test of faith.' What kind of trial are we facing here?"
I kneel beside Merrin, my voice soft but firm. "Listen to me. Whatever happens next, I've got you." The words come out more as a prayer than a promise—because right now, that's what we need most.
