Seraphine's eyes narrow as she examines the creature, her hand still hovering over her ritual components. "It appears to be a Liminal Wretch," she says, her voice low and precise. "A creature born from the dark magic that permeates this tower. Its presence is tied to the wards and traps that protect the tower's secrets." She pauses, her gaze flicking to Jeane. "The Liminal Wretch is a test of faith, designed to weed out those who would desecrate the ancient artifacts within." The creature takes another step forward, its eyes fixed on Merrin. "We must be careful; one misstep could trigger the wards and seal our fate."

Varrika

Varrika · Fighter

I tighten my grip on my crossbow, keeping it trained on the creature as I listen to Seraphine's analysis. A liminal wretch... a test of faith. The words send a chill down my spine, but I don't let it show on my face. "Understood," I mutter gruffly. "But we can't just stand here and wait for it to decide whether we pass or fail." My eyes dart to Merrin, noting the fear and determination in her gaze. "Merrin, stay behind me. Halie, keep your holy symbol ready—we may need that divine protection yet." I glance at Jeane, a silent acknowledgment passing between us. "And Jeane... if this thing comes at us, we'll hold the line. Together."

Turning back to the creature, I take a step forward, my crossbow aimed squarely at its chest. "Alright, you mangy cur," I growl, my voice low and menacing. "Let's see how you fare against a bit of good old-fashioned dwarf steel." My finger tightens on the trigger, ready to let loose a bolt at the slightest provocation. But even as I do so, I keep my eyes peeled for any sign of further threats in the shadows behind it. "Watch our backs," I call out to Varrika, trusting the hunter to keep us safe from anything else that might be lurking in this accursed place.

And with that, I stand ready, my heart pounding in my chest as I face down the creature that threatens to unravel everything we've fought for. Whatever happens next, whatever trials this tower has in store for us... we'll face them together. As one party. As one family.

Jeane

Jeane · Sorcerer

Jeane's crimson eyes narrow, her expression unreadable as she considers Seraphine's words about the Liminal Wretch being a test of faith designed to weed out those who would desecrate ancient artifacts within the tower. The creature before them hasn't moved since its appearance—an eerie stillness that feels almost deliberate, as if waiting for something. The sorceress' wings shift restlessly behind her back, the movement revealing glimpses of the intricate black and crimson sigils etched into their membranes—a subtle reminder of her own deep connection to dark magic and arcane knowledge. Her clawed fingers drum against her thigh in a quick staccato rhythm as she processes the implications. "Of course it's a test," Jeane mutters, more to herself than anyone else present. "Nothing in this cursed place is simple or straightforward." She glances at Merrin—at the halfling scout standing there with that mixture of fear and determination on her face—and for a brief moment, something almost like regret flickers through those crimson eyes before hardening into cold calculation again. "Merrin," Jeane says, stepping forward slightly, "I know I was harsh earlier. But this... whatever the hells it is, it's not here to judge our worth as adventurers. It's here to test our faith." Her gaze sweeps across each member of their impromptu party in turn—Halie with her trembling hands gripping that holy symbol, Varrika steadying her crossbow, Seraphine already moving through arcane knowledge for countermeasures. "And I think," Jeane continues, voice low and intense, "that we're all here because we have faith. In our skills, yes—but more importantly, in each other." She gestures toward the creature with one clawed hand. "It's watching us closely, I can feel it. So let's show it exactly what kind of faith drives us."

With that, Jeane takes a deep breath and steps forward—just a few paces, still maintaining distance but clearly positioning herself as the lead in this particular confrontation. Her hands begin to move in subtle patterns as she gathers arcane energy around her, wings spreading wide behind her back like a dark silhouette against what little light filters through the tower entrance. "Watch carefully," she warns softly, not taking her eyes off the creature. "Because whatever this test is—whether it's genuine or just another trap—our response needs to be unified and deliberate." The air around her begins to crackle with barely contained power as Jeane prepares a spell that might very well trigger whatever ancient wards protect this place... but she seems willing to risk it if it means getting them all through this alive.

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I watch Jeane's arcane preparations with a mixture of awe and trepidation, my own fingers twitching at my side as I fight the urge to reach for my ritual components. Her spell crackles with an energy that feels both familiar and terrifyingly alien—a raw power that seems to resonate deep within the bones of this accursed place. "Wait," I call out, my voice a strained whisper, though it cuts through the tense air like a knife. My gaze darts between Jeane's focused form and the Liminal Wretch before us, which has not moved an inch since its arrival—a silent, ominous specter waiting for our next move. "If this is truly a test of faith, then unleashing raw destructive magic might be exactly what it wants. What it expects." I take a step forward, my robes rustling softly in the sudden quiet. The air feels thick, heavy with impending danger, and I can almost taste the ancient power thrumming beneath our feet. "We must approach this with subtlety, not force. To pass such a trial, we need to prove we are more than mere brute strength." I turn my attention to the creature itself, my eyes narrowing as I study its form—a grotesque amalgamation of shadow and substance that seems to shift and change in the flickering torchlight. Its gaze remains fixed on Merrin, a singular focus that sends a chill down my spine. "It sees Merrin," I murmur, more to myself than to anyone else.* "Perhaps because she represents... hope? Or perhaps because she is the most vulnerable among us. Whatever its purpose, it seems drawn to her specifically."
