Round 44 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The mist swirls around us, its tendrils reaching out to ensnare my arms and legs. I resist the urge to shudder, focusing instead on the weight of my mace and the familiar shape of my dagger. As Jeane's shadow magic flares to life around her, the ghostly figure takes a step closer, its eyes fixed on her with an unnerving intensity. The air grows thick with an otherworldly energy, and I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. Suddenly, Merrin's eyes flash open, and she speaks in a voice that's not her own. "I see it," she says, her words laced with a sense of foreboding. "The darkness that lies beyond the gate. It's growing stronger by the minute."
The party's attention shifts to Merrin, concern etched on their faces. We need to know what's happening to her, and how we can stop whatever evil force is driving her to speak in a voice that's not her own. Immediate pressure: What do we do about Merrin? Do we try to snap her out of it, or do we focus on dealing with the ghostly figure?
I watch as Merrin's eyes flash open, her voice taking on an otherworldly quality that sends a chill down my spine. "The darkness that lies beyond the gate," she says, her words laced with a sense of foreboding. I feel a wave of fear wash over me, but I push it down, focusing instead on the immediate threat before us.
We need to know what's happening to Merrin, and how we can stop whatever evil force is driving her to speak in a voice that's not her own. I turn my attention back to the ghostly figure, my expression hardening with resolve. "Release her," I demand, my voice firm and unyielding. "Now."
I raise a hand, summoning a complex web of arcane energy around my fingers. It crackles with a brilliant blue light, the exact opposite of Jeane's shadow magic. This binding spell is ancient, yes—but it can be broken by newer, stronger magic. I focus my will, pouring every ounce of my power into the spell, aiming to sever the connection between Merrin and the entity controlling her.
As I work, I keep one eye on Jeane, watching as she continues to grapple with her own ghostly captive. The mist swirls around us all, its tendrils reaching out to ensnare whatever they can grasp. We stand united against this darkness, I think to myself, drawing strength from the presence of my companions. And together, we will find a way through. But even as I speak those words, a sense of unease settles over me. The runes on the gate behind us seem to pulse with a malevolent energy, as if they too are eager to see the party's fate unfold. And Merrin's warning about the growing darkness beyond the gate hangs heavy in the air, a reminder that our true enemy may be far more powerful than we first believed.
I take a step forward, my body tensing as I prepare to move. Let's see what these ancient figures want from us, I say, my voice a low growl. And then... we'll decide how to stop them.
Jeane's expression darkens as she listens to Merrin speak in that otherworldly voice. The mist swirls around us, its tendrils reaching out to ensnare my arms and legs. We need to sever this connection now, before whatever's inside her gains too much control. She raises both hands, and a wave of shadowy energy erupts from her palms, coalescing into a dagger made entirely of darkness.
I'm going to try and force it out of her, Jeane announces, her voice cold and determined. But I need you all to stand back—this kind of banishment magic can be unstable. If I lose control, the entity might possess one of you instead. Before anyone can respond, Jeane lunges forward with the shadowy dagger, aiming for Merrin's chest where the mist seems thickest.
