The air is heavy with the scent of decay as Halie's words hang in the silence. The party's faces are etched with concern and trepidation, each lost in their own thoughts. Merrin's eyes dart towards the rune-covered gate, her hand still on the hilt of her dagger, ready for anything that might emerge from the darkness. Varrika's gaze remains fixed on Jeane, her expression a mixture of anger and worry. Seraphine's attention is drawn to the tower entrance, her staff at the ready, as if waiting for something to unfold. Jeane stands frozen, her eyes fixed on Halie, the tension between them palpable. The silence stretches out, punctuated only by the faint creaking of old wooden beams in the wind. As the moments tick by, the weight of their decision becomes increasingly apparent, and the party realizes that they must now face the consequences of their actions head-on.

Halie

Halie · Cleric

I pause, processing the sudden feeling of wrongness in the air. The way that entity vanished... it wasn't like anything I've encountered before. My fingers tighten around my holy symbol, drawing strength from its familiar presence. The magic used was... raw. Ancient. And now it's gone, leaving only this residue and a growing sense of unease. I scan the faces of my companions, my expression serious. Something about that banishment felt off-balance, like we've disturbed something much deeper than just a simple guardian. To Jeane, I offer a small, sincere smile. Your power is immense, but sometimes... the most powerful spell is the one not cast. We need to be more deliberate in our actions here—this place has a way of punishing carelessness.* [END_OF_TURN]

Seraphine

Seraphine · Wizard

I feel a chill run down my spine as Halie voices my own growing sense of unease. The air around us feels thick and heavy, charged with an energy I can't quite describe.
The shadow creature's banishment was a powerful act, but its aftermath... something about it is profoundly wrong.
I turn to face the others, my expression grave. "Halie is right. That entity's departure left a void—a disturbance in the magical currents of this place. We felt it as soon as the spell took effect."
My gaze drifts back to the rune-covered gate, where the darkness seems to have deepened even further. "Whatever that guardian was protecting, we've now exposed it to whatever lies beyond our understanding. And that... that could be the real danger."
I take a step closer to Jeane, my voice soft but firm. "Your magic is formidable, and I know you only meant to protect us. But here? In this ancient place? We cannot afford to underestimate the consequences of our actions."
My mind races, trying to recall every scrap of lore I've ever studied about ancient guardian spirits. "Some texts speak of such entities as the last line of defense against cosmic horrors—beings from beyond the veil of reality itself. If we have just removed that protection..."
The thought trails off into a chilling silence. I shake my head, trying to clear it. "No, we mustn't jump to conclusions. But we do need to proceed with extreme caution."
I look at Halie, a newfound respect in my eyes. "Your suggestion—to let you try diplomacy first—is sound. We know so little about what we're facing here. Perhaps there's more to learn before we resort to brute force again."
With that, I turn back to the gate, my staff held ready at my side. The Time-Splitting Sword still beckons from within, but now its allure is tempered by a deepening fear of what we might unleash in retrieving it. "Whatever happens next, we face it together. And we learn from our mistakes. That creature... it was old magic, powerful and perhaps even sacred in its own way. We must be more careful about what we destroy in our pursuit of power."
