Shadow of the Ancients / Run 009 / Main Story
Round 8 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Halie swings her mace in a wide arc, clearing the corridor, the shadowy entity recoils, its form flickering like a dying candle flame. However, instead of dissipating, it begins to take shape, morphing into a towering figure with tendrils of darkness that writhe like snakes. The entity's presence causes the air to distort and ripple, as if reality itself is being twisted by its power. Halie stumbles back, her holy symbol wavering in her hands, but her grip on her mace tightens. The group stands frozen, waiting for the outcome of Halie's attack. The whispering voices reach a fever pitch, and the darkness seems to press in on all sides, as if it's trying to suffocate them. Suddenly, the entity lunges at Halie once again, its tendrils whipping out like whips.
The darkness writhes and twists, the entity lashing out with tendrils of pure shadow.
I feel the weight of the tower pressing down on us, its ancient magic seeping into my very bones. My fingers twitch towards my crossbow, but something holds me back - a nagging feeling that this creature is more than just a simple monster.
Halie's voice rings out, her faith shining through even in the face of such overwhelming darkness.
I catch Jeane's eye, the sorcerer's gaze locked on the entity as she weaves a spell of her own. The air crackles with power, and I feel the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Seraphine's words echo in my mind - "This tower is alive in some way." Could this...thing...be a manifestation of that life? A guardian, or something even more sinister?
I take a step forward, my hand hovering over the hilt of my dagger. The entity's form shifts and changes, its darkness pooling like oil on water.
I can't shake the feeling that we're missing something crucial here. That there's a secret buried in the heart of this place, one that we're in danger of uncovering by force alone.
But Halie is right - we can't back down now. Not with the sword so close at hand. And so I prepare to join the fight, my mind racing as I try to reconcile the rogue's instincts with the scout's need for caution.
Whatever this creature is, whatever it wants...we'll face it together. And if the tower has more tricks up its sleeve, well...that's what the rest of us are here for.
I take a deep breath, my grip tightening on my dagger.
*Let's show this thing what we're made of.
Jeane raises her hand, arcane energies swirling around her fingertips, but she doesn't yet cast a spell. That's no ordinary shadow—this tower is alive in some way. The magic in that darkness... it feels ancient and purposeful. Her crimson eyes narrow as she studies the writhing entity. We're dealing with something more complex than just random undead. Halie's unshakeable faith is impressive, but also concerning; Merrin's rogue instincts might be what we need most right now. Careful, Halie—I agree we can't back down, but if this thing is a guardian rather than just a trap, destroying it might unleash worse things. Jeane turns to the fighter and wizard. Varrika, cover Halie's left flank with that crossbow—she's going to need protection if she keeps engaging it directly. Seraphine, can you enhance her holy symbol somehow? She takes a deep breath, feeling the oppressive weight of the tower pressing down on them all. I'll try to peel back its illusions or find a weak point through arcane analysis... but we might be better off negotiating than fighting if this thing was designed to protect something specific. Her tone carries both her usual sly authority and genuine concern about what they're up against now.
She raises one hand, beginning a subtle spell that causes the air around it to shimmer with distorted visions. Let me see its true form before we commit fully... if it has weaknesses or tells us who—or what—it really is. The magic pulses outward towards the entity in slow waves, trying not to provoke an attack while attempting to reveal information rather than just raw power.
To Merrin specifically, I know you've got that scout's caution—I feel it too. But whatever this thing is, we need to understand it before we fight blindly and make things worse. She keeps her attention primarily on the shadow creature but trusts Merrin's instincts will align with hers in reading the situation.
I clench my jaw, feeling the wrongness of this place seep into my very bones. This isn't natural—whatever power animates these walls, it's ancient and profane. My grip on the holy symbol tightens until my knuckles turn white; its silver surface feels unnaturally cold against my palm. Jeane might be right about diplomacy, but that thing...it's not listening to reason. It's pure darkness given form. I step forward without hesitation, raising the heavy mace in a guard position. I'm not here to negotiate with abominations—we came for the sword, and nothing will stop me from completing this quest. My voice is steady despite the dread coiling in my gut. But Merrin's right too—something about this feels...off-balance. Like we're playing into its hands somehow. I glance at Seraphine. If this thing was designed to test faith, then let it try me! The air crackles with arcane energy as the wizard works her spell. Whatever you're seeing in its true form—tell us all. We need to know what we're truly facing here.
