The tower groaned around them, its ancient stone crying out in protest as the magic within it twisted and fought back against their intrusion. The sound of tearing flesh and splintering bone echoed up from the pit—Varikka was still alive down there, but something had her, and it wasn't letting go easily.

Halie descended into the abyss, her hands slick with sweat on the rope as she lowered herself into the darkness. Each beat of her heart seemed to echo in the oppressive silence below. "Varikka!" she called out, her voice bouncing off unseen walls. "Can you hear me? Are you okay?" The air down here was thick with decay and something else—magic, old and wrong. She could feel it prickling at her skin, making the holy symbol around her neck feel heavy and cold.

Seraphine stood beside Jeane, her staff crackling with arcane energy as she maintained a shield spell around them all. The wizard's sharp eyes scanned the darkness beyond the pit, tension evident in every line of her body. "We need to get moving," she said, her voice tight with tension. "Whatever that thing is, it’s getting closer." The screeching sound seemed to be coming from deeper within the tower now—something else was awake down here.

Jeane stood frozen, her wings tucked close against her back as the water rose around her ankles. She could hear the thing in the pit thrashing below, dragging Varikka back down into the darkness. The screeching from the passage was getting louder, closer—something else was coming. "Gods damn it all," she spat, her voice barely audible over the chaos. Her eyes darted between Merrin and Seraphine struggling with the rope, Halie's desperate cries echoing down from above, and the dark shape moving in the water below.

The tower rumbled again, a low groan that seemed to vibrate through the very stones themselves. Dust fell from the ceiling in a fine shower, and a crack appeared in the wall near where Seraphine stood. The wizard yelped and leapt back, her spell faltering for a moment as she scrambled to maintain it. "Move!" Jeane shouted, grabbing Merrin's arm and pulling her away from the collapsing section. The stone gave way with a sickening crack, revealing more darkness beyond—a hidden passage?

Halie continued her descent into the pit, her heart pounding in her chest. The sound of tearing flesh grew louder as she neared the bottom—whatever had Varikka was still alive, and it was still fighting. She reached the bottom at last, her feet splashing down into frigid water. "Varikka!" she called out again, moving forward cautiously through the darkness.

Seraphine stumbled back from the collapsing wall, her spell wavering as she fought to regain control. The crack in the stone spread, revealing a narrow passage leading deeper into the tower. Dust and ancient air poured out from within, carrying with it the unmistakable stench of decay and something else—magic, old and powerful. "We can't stay here," she said, her voice barely audible over the rumbling of the collapsing structure.

Jeane helped Merrin to her feet, her eyes fixed on the newly revealed passage. The water around them was rising fast now, swirling with unseen currents that tugged at their legs. Whatever had Varikka in the pit below was thrashing harder, its struggles sending waves lapping against the stone walls. "We need to find a way out," she said, her voice tight with fear and determination. "And we need to do it fast."
