Round 238 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As Merrin blocks access to the pedestal, Seraphine begins to examine the box's design more closely, tracing intricate patterns with her fingers. The pulsing light grows brighter, and the air in the chamber seems to vibrate with anticipation. Suddenly, a low hum emanates from the box, and the lid slides open, revealing a small, crystal orb nestled within a bed of velvet. The chamber falls silent, except for the soft hum of the pedestal and the faint scent of old parchment wafting through the air. The orb pulsates with an otherworldly energy, casting a warm, golden light throughout the room. Seraphine's eyes widen as she reaches out to claim the orb, but Jeane swiftly intervenes, her hand grasping Seraphine's wrist in a firm but gentle grasp. "Wait," Jeane says, her voice low and urgent. "We don't know what this is or what it might do."
I place myself between Seraphine and the pedestal, my hand hovering over the orb but not yet touching it. The magical aura pulses warm against my skin—old power, yes, but also something living. "Wait," I say firmly, meeting both Merrin's cautious gaze at the entrance and Seraphine's eager one beside me. "We don't know what this is or what it might do."
I look at Jeane's hand on my wrist, then up into her eyes, seeing the clear concern there. She’s right, of course—we have no idea what this orb does or why it was left here so specifically. My heart beats faster as I stare at the object, its golden light pulsing like a heartbeat. Every instinct screams that this is important, that it could be the key to unlocking whatever power sealed us in this place.
But Jeane's caution is wise too. We are trapped here, and rushing into unknown dangers without preparation would be foolish. I take a deep breath, forcing my hand to relax at my side. "You're right," I say, my voice quieter than I intend. "We should be careful."
My gaze drifts back to the orb, then to the intricate patterns etched into the box itself. They look like some kind of ancient language, symbols and runes intertwined in a complex design that seems to shift subtly when I look at it from different angles. "However," I add, a flicker of excitement sparking within me "if this is part of a trial system, as you suggested... then understanding these patterns could be crucial. They might have instructions for how to use the orb safely."
The ward pulses again—a reminder of how much energy it costs Seraphine to hold us together in this strange temporal stasis. I feel a pang of worry for her, but also a renewed sense of purpose. We need to find a way out, and if this is a trial, then we can’t afford to waste time arguing. "Look," I say, pointing at the box's design "see how these symbols here form a sequence? It reminds me of the unlocking runes we learned about in the College of Arcana."
I step closer, running my fingers over the cool metal of the box. The patterns seem to warm slightly under my touch. "Maybe there’s a specific order we need to follow? Or perhaps a magical word or phrase hidden within them?" My mind is already racing with possibilities, each one more exciting than the last. "We could be standing right on the edge of something incredible—a secret passage, a powerful artifact, or even the key to restoring our connection to our home world."
I look back at Jeane, my expression both serious and hopeful. "I know the risk is real. But so is the potential reward. And if we can figure out how to use this safely... it might be worth the risk." The orb pulses again, its light seeming to grow brighter as I speak. It feels like it’s responding to me, calling out to be touched and used. "Let me study these patterns," I say, my voice firm now with determination "while you maintain the ward and Merrin keeps watch. If there is a way to open this safely, I will find it."
My eyes meet Jeane's one last time, silently pleading for her trust and support. "We came here seeking challenges, didn't we? This could be the first one. And if we pass it... well, then maybe everything else waiting in this labyrinth will be a little less dangerous." I give her a small, reassuring smile before turning back to the box, my fingers already tracing the intricate patterns with a newfound sense of purpose.*
