The Archive Keeper's form shimmered like heat haze as she regarded the two women before her, a knowing smile playing across her lips. The temporal distortion field around them hummed with barely contained power, portals opening and closing in a dizzying dance of possibility.
"Of course," she rasped, her voice grating against the ambient magic like sandpaper on bone. "Your hunger for knowledge is... understandable." Her eyes gleamed with an inner luminescence that seemed to peer into places beyond the physical world. "But be warned—the Temporal Labyrinth is not merely a test of intellect or will. It challenges the very fabric of your being."
Jeane's wings twitched involuntarily, her every survival instinct screaming alarm at the sudden appearance of this ancient figure. Those eyes—they were wrong somehow, filled with an ancient knowledge that made her want to recoil. And she could have sworn they flickered with something like recognition when they landed on her.
The succubus raised her hands slowly, palms out in a placating gesture, but her fingers were already coiling with arcane energy beneath the surface. She'd faced worse threats than an ethereal librarian, surely. But something about this one made her...
Seraphine's mind reeled from the sheer volume of shared knowledge, a dizzying torrent that threatened to overwhelm her senses at any moment. The Archive Keeper's words barely registered through the cognitive whirlwind, but something in her tone—an amusement?..
The elf woman took a deep breath, forcing herself to focus. "I agree with Seraphine," she said, her voice firm despite the tremor that ran through her. "We came here looking for answers, for power." Her gaze locked with the Archive Keeper's, and for a moment, the ancient figure's smile seemed to widen ever so slightly.
"Then follow me," the Archive Keeper intoned, turning toward one of the shimmering portals. "The Temporal Labyrinth awaits."
Jeane's stomach dropped as the portal yawned open, revealing a corridor that seemed to stretch into infinity in both directions. The walls pulsed with a sickly blue light, and the air shimmered like heat haze over fresh pavement.
Seraphine stepped closer to Jeane, her hand instinctively reaching for a staff that wasn't there—a reminder of their precarious situation. "Are you sure about this?" she hissed under her breath.
Jeane's response was a tight smile that didn't reach her eyes. "No," she admitted, "but I'm equally unsure about staying here and waiting for the tower to collapse around us." She took a deep breath, summoning her courage—and her magic. The arcane energy crackled more visibly now, dancing between her fingertips like tiny lightning bolts.
"Stay close," Jeane murmured, her crimson eyes fixed on the portal's edge. "And whatever happens... don't let go of my hand."
Seraphine nodded, gripping Jeane's hand tightly as they stepped through the portal together. The world seemed to stretch and compress around them, reality bending like elastic before snapping back into place with a jolt that made her teeth ache.
They stumbled out onto what appeared to be an endless hallway, walls pulsing with blue light that cast eerie shadows across the floor. The air tasted of ozone and something else—something ancient and wrong.
The Archive Keeper materialized ahead of them, her tattered robes swirling despite the lack of breeze. "Welcome to the Temporal Labyrinth," she rasped, her voice echoing from multiple directions at once. "Your journey begins here."
Jeane's wings twitched nervously as she surveyed their surroundings. "And how exactly do we... navigate this place?" she asked, her voice barely concealing her unease.
The Archive Keeper's smile widened impossibly, revealing teeth that seemed too numerous and pointed to be entirely human. "That," she said, "is for you to discover."
