Round 191 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

The mirrors ripple and distort as the reflection's silver eyes gleam with an otherworldly intensity. The second mirror, with its image of Merrin's broken body, pulses with a soft blue light. As Jeane points to it, the mirror's surface shimmers, revealing a vision of Merrin's final moments before her fall. The scene shifts to show Elric standing above her body, his eyes black as coal, while the ground beneath him seems to be cracked and twisted, as if reality itself has been torn apart. The Keeper of the Test's voice booms from the shadows, "The balance must be restored before the entire tower falls!" The reflection takes another step forward, its smile never faltering. "You have chosen to confront your past," it says. "Now, you must face the trials within. Each mirror will present you with a challenge. The first trial is the Labyrinth of Reflections."
I watch, transfixed and horrified, as the scene on the mirror unfolds before us. To see Merrin like that—broken, lifeless—is a fresh agony I didn't think my heart could bear. And Elric... his eyes, so dark and empty, standing over her body. What did this mean? Was he involved in some way? Or was this just another cruel trick of this twisted place? The reflection's words echo in my mind—"You have chosen to confront your past"—but all I feel is a overwhelming sense of loss and rage. We came here for answers, and all we've found is more pain. The air in the chamber grows colder, heavier, as if the very walls are judging us for our failure.
"I... I don't understand," I stammer, my voice barely audible over the roaring in my ears. My gaze darts between Merrin's body and Elric's shadowed form, trying to piece together what happened. "This can't be right. It has to be a trick."
Jeane is still by my side, her presence solid and grounding. Her hand squeezes mine, a silent offer of support that I desperately cling to. The runes on her skin pulse with a frantic energy, matching the pounding of my own heart.
The Keeper of the Test's voice booms again—"The balance must be restored before the entire tower falls!"—but it feels like an empty threat now. What good is balance when our friend is dead? When our mentor has become this... this thing standing over her corpse?
"I have to get closer," I mutter, more to myself than to Jeane. I take a step towards the mirror, my free hand outstretched as if I could reach through the glass and touch Merrin's hair, smooth it away from her face one last time. But my fingers pass right through the image, leaving only a tingling sensation on my skin.
The reflection watches us impassively, its smile never wavering. "You have chosen to confront your past," it repeats, as if we haven't heard it the first time. "Now, you must face the trials within. Each mirror will present you with a challenge. The first trial is the Labyrinth of Reflections."
A shiver runs down my spine at its words. A labyrinth? More tests? But what choice do we have? We came here for answers, and now they're being offered—at a terrible price.
"The first trial," I echo softly, turning to face Jeane fully. Her expression is one of grim determination, her jaw set with a resolve that matches my own. "We can’t give up now. Not after seeing this."
I look back at the mirror, at Merrin's still form. She deserves justice, even if she can no longer ask for it herself. And Elric... he needs to be held accountable. Whatever these trials hold, whatever darkness lies ahead, we'll face it together. For her, for us, for all of it.
"I'm ready," I say, my voice gaining strength. I pull Jeane closer, our shoulders touching in a silent promise of solidarity. The mirror pulses with a deeper blue light, the image of Merrin fading as a new scene begins to form—an intricate, ever-shifting pattern of corridors and doors.
"Whatever's waiting for us in that labyrinth," I whisper, more to myself than to Jeane, "we face it together. No more running, no more hiding. We find out what happened, and we bring Merrin home... one way or another."
With that, I take a deep breath and reach out my hand towards the mirror's surface, bracing myself for whatever comes next. The air around us crackles with an ancient power, and the ground beneath our feet trembles slightly. It's beginning.*
