Round 167 Transcript
Episode 1 · Episode Round 1

As the party approaches the beetle, Seraphine's eyes dart back and forth, her mind racing to match the pattern on the beetle's antennae with those on the walls. She takes a deep breath, then nods, and begins to move in sync with the beetle's movements. The ground shudders beneath their feet, and the air vibrates with magical energy as they attempt to replicate the pattern. Suddenly, a loud crack echoes through the cavern, followed by a shower of sparks and a faint hum that seems to be pulling everything towards the yawning void ahead. The party stumbles, caught off guard by the sudden explosion of magic. Jeane's wings falter, and she struggles to maintain her balance, while Varrika's mace slips from her grasp, clattering to the ground. The beetle, now fully entranced in their synchronized movements, continues to advance, its antennae twitching wildly as it pulls the party towards the void. The ground gives a violent shudder, and the air seems to distort around them, making it impossible to predict which direction they will be pulled next.
I stumble as the ground gives another violent shudder, my hands instinctively reaching out to steady myself against the wall. The runes there seem to pulse even brighter, almost in response to my touch, sending a jolt of energy up my arms. My gaze darts from the beetle to the yawning void ahead, then back to Jeane and Varrika. Panic claws at my throat, but I force myself to take a deep breath.
The beetle's antennae are twitching wildly now, its entire body vibrating in time with the pulsing runes. It’s clear that our attempt to match its pattern has only served to enrage it further. Or perhaps... to awaken something within it?
"I think we made a mistake," I call out over the rumbling of the cavern, my voice strained but clear. "This isn’t just about replicating a sequence. It’s about controlling the magic itself."
I take a step back from the wall, away from the intense energy emanating from the runes. My mind is racing, trying to process all the new information—the explosion of magic, the distortion in the air, the sudden aggression of the beetle.
The air shimmers around us, and I feel an unnatural pressure building, like the world is trying to push us in one direction. Towards the void. I look at Jeane and Varrika, seeing the same realization dawning on their faces.
"This isn’t a puzzle," I say, my voice dropping to a desperate murmur, "it’s a test of our ability to resist being pulled into that... whatever it is."
I gesture towards the yawning maw ahead, where strange shapes seem to be moving within its depths. It looks like a portal, but to where—or what?—I can only imagine.
"We have to fight it," I declare, my resolve hardening despite the fear coiling in my gut. "Jeane, if you can’t fly, we need to find another way out of this chamber. Varrika, stay alert—the beetle might be a distraction for something worse coming our way."
I turn back to the runes on the wall, my eyes narrowing as I try to decipher their meaning. They seem to be counting down now, each pulse bringing us closer to some unknown end. My heart hammers in my chest, but I force myself to focus.
"There has to be a way to stop this," I mutter, more to myself than to my companions. I begin to trace the lines of the runes with my fingers, feeling for any patterns, any clues that might lead us to safety—or at least to understanding what we’re facing.
