As the female figure's words hang in the air, the ground beneath us gives a final, ominous shudder. The stone door at the end of the right path begins to slide open, revealing a narrow chamber beyond. The spirit's cowl tilts slightly as she regards Jeane, and I can see the amusement in her voice reflected on her face. The tunnel continues to shake violently, and debris rains down from the ceiling. The left path is now a yawning chasm, a pit where Merrin vanished into the abyss. The air is thick with the smell of decay and ozone, and I can feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end. The spirit raises both hands again, and the tunnel seems to pause for a moment, as if waiting for our response. "We have two choices," she repeats, her voice ringing with finality. "You can try to escape back the way you came, though I doubt even your sorceress' magic could hold this tower together now. Or you can face me and my test." The stone door at the end of the path creaks open further, revealing a dark and ominous interior beyond.

I stare at the spirit, my heart hammering against my ribs, the air thick with the smell of decay and that strange, ozone-like energy crackling around us.
The collapse behind us, the pit where Merrin fell—it's all because we tried to rush this binding, thinking we knew better than the magic we were meddling with. The guilt is a heavy stone in my gut.
But now, faced with this choice—escaping back into certain doom, or facing her test—I know what I have to do.
The runes on my fingers are still burning, pulsing with a wild energy that feels both terrifying and exhilarating. It's a power we unleashed, and a responsibility we can't just abandon.
I turn to Jeane, my voice dropping to a strained whisper. "We can't go back—she's right about the tower. And even if we could, Merrin is still down there." I gesture towards the pit with a trembling hand.
My gaze drops to the massive stone door at the end of the right path, the runes on it mirroring those on my own skin. A shiver runs down my spine as I realize what this must mean. "This is our only way forward now—her test, whatever it is."
I take a deep breath, steeling myself for what we have to do next. The air crackles with ancient power, and I can feel the spirit's eyes boring into me.
"Let's see what she wants," I say, my voice trembling slightly as I take a tentative step towards the open door, my hand still clasped tightly in Jeane’s.
The spirit watches us approach, her cowl tilting like a bird of prey. As we near the threshold, the air grows even colder, a bone-deep chill that seems to seep into my very bones. The runes on my fingers pulse in time with my racing heart.
I look back at Jeane one last time, a silent question passing between us. She gives a small, determined nod, her grip on my hand firm and reassuring. Together, we step across the threshold into the spirit's chamber, ready to face whatever test awaits us there.
The door slams shut behind us with an ominous thud, sealing us inside.
